Ramadan Moon, by Na'ima Robert

Ramadan, the month of fasting, doesn't begin all at once. It begins with a whisper And a prayer And a wish. Muslims all over the world celebrate Ramadan and the joyful days of Eid-ul-Fitr at the end of the month of fasting as the most special time of year. This lyrical and inspiring picture book captures the wonder and joy of this great annual event, from the perspective of a child. Accompanied by Iranian inspired illustrations, the story follows the waxing of the moon from the first new crescent to full moon and waning until Eid is heralded by the first sighting of the second new moon. Written and illustrated by Muslims, this is a book for all children who celebrate Ramadan and those in the wider communities who want to understand why this is such a special experience for Muslims.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4—A girl describes the wave of excitement that spreads across the world when the Ramadan Moon is seen. She explains what happens throughout the month as people pray in mosques and listen to imams read verses from the Qur'an. The days are filled with good deeds, charitable offerings, caring, and politeness. The child tells readers that the greatest part of Ramadan is the Night of Power, a time of penitence, worship, and making wishes. The final days are counted for the coming of Eid-ul-Fitr. The story ends with the child sitting on a windowsill looking at the Moon and saying, "Please hurry back, my silver friend,/My beautiful Ramadan Moon." Robert's poetic style is captivating and enhanced by Adl's appealing and colorful multimedia illustrations. Throughout the story, the artist depicts the Moon, showing its waxing and waning phases as a family is seen worshipping and rejoicing.—Fawzia Gilani-Williams, An-Noor School, Windsor, Ontario

From Booklist
As in Hena Khan’s Night of the Moon (2008), this richly illustrated offering follows a Muslim family through its observance of the “Month of Mercy.” In lines of free-verse poetry, a girl describes watching for the first “silver sliver of brightness / . . . That is the Ramadan Moon.” During subsequent days of fasting and prayer, the girl and her family “keep busy / With all sorts of good deeds,” and children of all religious backgrounds will recognize similarities in the ways that the girl tries to translate faith into action. Other titles offer fuller explanations of terms such as Eid Day. But this book’s poetic words and playful, patterned collage artwork capture both the solemnity and joy of religious practice and, in scenes of worshippers of every type and hue, show the diversity of the Muslim community around the world. Grades K-3. --Gillian Engberg

Review
With religious beliefs being the root cause of heated intolerance, books like Ramadan Moon address this with simple stories that explain these beliefs. A delightful book for children to understand the beliefs of classmates and friends.' --Irish Examiner

A beautifully designed book which introduces children to the concept of keeping Ramadan. --Bookseller

What I found most remarkable about this book is how beautifully the verse and images mirror both the emotions evoked by the text and the intended significance of this holiday. It works as well for families who celebrate Ramadan as it does for for anyone wishing to understand what it means to more than a billion people worldwide. --Kepler's Review

The importance and beauty of the festival is wonderfully captured in this poetic and pyrical picture book, warmly illustrated with scenes of family and community life. This book provides an illuminating and enriching introduction to all of seeking wider cultural understanding as well as a special and warm experience for those who celebrate Ramadan. This is a book which can be shared with a wide age-range of primary school pupils. --School Librarian, December, 2010

The outstanding feature of the book is that it captures the excitement and ethos that underlie the principles of Ramadan...The flowing text in combination with its striking illustrations makes the book fascinating for young readers and listeners. --Books for Keeps, November 2009

With a captivating cover and lyrical text, this is an ideal way to explore and understand the beliefs behind Ramadan. I loved the creative artwork. An excellent addition to any school's cultural diversity collection. --Carousel

Best Ramadan book I've read!
By JCFS
Our family has several Ramadan books, written by both Muslims and non-Muslims. This is the best Ramadan book I've read by far. It hits all the highlights about what the month is about, and it does so with lovely prose and illustrations. More than that though, it really captures the emotions of the month- excitement at sighting the crescent to begin Ramadan; tiredness, humility, thankfulness after a day of fasting; sadness as we realize the month is coming to a close; striving harder to do more good deeds; and excitement about the Eid celebration. I know it's hard for non-Muslims to understand the emotional attachment Muslims have for a whole month of fasting, but this book does a great job of trying to put those feelings into words. Well done Na'ima Robert and Shirin Adl!

By Mohammad Mansoor
I enjoy her books, and so do my kids. The artwork is so unique, and the pictures illustrate the culture and practices really well. I sent this book to my son's preschool, and his teachers enjoyed them the most. She also has a Hajj one.
