JIM PUHALLA is President of Sportscape International, Inc., a firm specializing in the design, construction, renovation, and maintenance of sports fields and related facilities. He has contributed numerous articles to Sports Turf magazine and received the magazine?s "Baseball Diamond of the Year" award in 1995 for reconstructing Boardman High School?s field in Ohio.

JEFF KRANS is Professor of Agronomy in the Golf and Sports Turf Management program at Mississippi State University. He has conducted extensive turfgrass research, as well as developed, patented, and commercialized four turf-type bermudagrass cultivars.

MIKE GOATLEY is Professor of Agronomy in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University. He has conducted turfgrass research in the areas of plant nutrition, plant growth regulation, and soil modification.

Good reference learned a lot

Book is good but the title is a little deceiving. Quite often it states, Paraphrasing, "buy our other book if you really want more specifics on field design". However I did learn alot and it is a good reference.

The Best Technical Reference on Baseball Fields I could find
By The Ideator
I used this technical reference book for a course in Contracts and Procurement, in which I had to write detailed specifications for a baseball park. These specifications were part of a Request for Proposal to a fictitious group of general contractors.

This book left no stone unturned, educating me on all aspects of building and maintaining a ball diamond. My professor, who had seen many similar papers before, was impressed and I received a perfect mark.

I also interviewed a general contractor who was building 8 baseball fields, and found I was able to talk intelligently with him, and knew all the various terms and types of materials used in a baseball field, as a direct result of reading this book.

I was impressed with the overall knowledge of the authors, starting with how to grade the park for maximum drainage and playability, fencing, types of turf required for various weather zones in North America, pest and weed prevention, layout, dimensions, equipment used for maintaining and marking the field -- there wasn't one thing I wanted to know that I couldn't find in this book.

I recommend it very highly.

You can't tell a book by it's cover

The outside as well as pages arrived to me in rather good condition however there was a sneezy surprise, once I examined the pages I notice close to 90% of them are plastered in highlighter fluid. Not one word was safe from the previous owners marker. This does not take away from the overall experience of the book but was an unexpected surprise that only stands out as a blemish. That is why I decided to rate my experience as a 3, be weary of this seller as you don't know what he has in store for you.

Decent for your students, even good in spots, but not quite it

Positives:
Rich variety of related readings--poems and prose (including a great Richard Armour send-up of much of the play)
Good reflection questions
A map of Italy
An age-appropriate overview of the Globe Theater, Shakespeare, and Elizabethan times
The whole play--no bowdlerization

Negatives:
Delicate binding--there's no way this book can go home with students; the spine is just glue that cracks after a few readings
Delicate footnotes--none of the sexual puns (and they are legion) are even alluded to
Some minor textual changes (Capulet, instead of saying "How, how, how, how, what's this, choplogic?" says "How now, how now, what's this, chopped logic?"; substitution of "and" for "an" ["if"]).

I really like the Maynard Mack/Heinemann version of the play--this one, as well as Hamlet and Othello. They are superb student texts, as are the Rex Gibson-edited versions (Cambridge School Shakespeare).

How to deal with a passive aggressive boss?

In this book, Paula De Angelis brings to the forefront an issue usually hidden in daily day workplaces: the existence of team relationships tainted by destructive behaviors impossible to identify and challenge.

What is so wrong in harboring hidden anger in a workteam? The fact that there is hidden resistance prevents it from being addressed and solved. If people don't know that their co-workers or bosses harbor hidden resentment towards them, no redress can be offered. Having no venting and solving of the grievance leaves the door open to vile behaviors like revenge, project sabotaging, reputation damage...and other backstabbing actions.

Why people don't confront any more? The mere hint of being perceived as "angry" stops lots of employees from expressing legitimate grievances. The only other answer is to enact hidden acts of sabotage that will, sooner or later, destroy careers and reputations.

De Angelis is very good at describing the indicators of passive aggression; the chapter on remedies is a bit short. Perhaps we need to open up this issue and design interventions to make people responsible at the organizational level for the damage they can cause others and their careers...now, we only know how to identify the behavior, and protect ourselves.

It is what we all know to be true but don't want to admitt.

This really hit home with me. I was employeed for over 14 years and as the abuse became more evident I made excuses to convince my leadership had my best interest at heart. I have left the job I thought I loved and found peace and my self worth again. Funny thing is I didn't know I had lost those things. Great book just be honest with yourself as you read it.

The author is convinced by the philosopher Bertrand Russell's view that knowledge concerning the future is possible within certain limits, although it is impossible to say how much the limits may be enlarged with the progress of science. Russell states in 'Our Knowledge of the External World' (1914) "But what is evident is that any proposition about the future belongs by its subject-matter to some particular science, and is to be ascertained, if at all, by the methods of that science".

About the Author
Robert H. Samet is a civil engineer with forty years experience as a specialist consultant in planning and futures research. He was a consultant of US-based Planning Research Corporation that applied systems science approaches to international development programmes in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. His clients included the Ministries of Planning in both Algeria and Saudi Arabia and also the Saudi Royal Commission for Industrial Cities. He directed a multi-client study to develop the London Megapolis Regional Information System to explain the changing gradients between locations in property investment returns.��He is the author of four articles for the journal 'Futures': 'Futurists and their schools' (Vol. 42 (8) 2010), 'Exploring the future with complexity science: the emerging models' (Vol. 43 (8) 2011), 'Complexity science and theory development for the futures field' (Vol. 44 (5) 2012), and 'Complexity, the science of cities and long-range futures' (Vol. 47 (3) 2013). He and his wife live in a village in Lincolnshire, England, and have four married sons in the USA, Scotland, France and Switzerland.

"Heavy" but Interesting

Complexity science (as a "formal" science) is only about 40 years old (since I'm twice that age, I think of it as a "young" science).This book is very thorough and well written, and it's nice to know that within only 40 years the subject has obtained enough credibility to be considered by a wide range of subject matter experts in a fairly wide variety of fields. Chapter 3 gives a brief "history" of some of the basic concepts of complexity science, which will be interesting for new readers about the field.
While I didn't find EXACTLY what I had hoped in the book (I was hoping for something that probably hasn't been written yet), I did find it very interesting and have already recommended it to a long time friend who has an intense interest in planning. If you are interested in the prospects for the planet, you'll be pleased to find that at least some folk are attempting to anticipate, and therefore possibly improve, prospects for the earth on a L O N G range perspective.

Promised more than it delivered

A big book that can be boiled down to a sentence: Human society has predictable patterns and once you discover those patterns you can predict the future.

Now, that only applies to broad general future predictions and it completely ignores the impact disruptive technologies have on these predictable patterns. So, you really can't do long-range futures research because of emergent behaviors as described in complexity science. Thus, the author inadvertently refutes the premise of his own book.

You are better off reading some good books on scenario planning if you want to do some actual futures research.

This excellent volume presents the "biographies" of 16 such places, from Maine to California. Through them, Nabokov surveys a wide range of Native American spiritual practices and reveals how intrusions into Native Americans' land have also constituted assaults upon their religious beliefs. Indeed, many of the assaults continue to this day: after the disruptions caused by war, disease, missionary activity and forced relocation came those of hydroelectric dams, agribusiness, parking lots and extreme sports buffs. Nabokov present 16 "biographies of place," each of a habitat illustrating the bond between North American Indian cultures and their environment perpetuated by myths, legends, and rituals. He maps out some of the thousands of mounds in the Midwest thought to express cosmological beliefs and recounts multiple visits by an anthropologist in the 1930s to a Canadian Ojibwa enclave "caught in a time capsule" manifested by its all-consuming ties to the natural world. An account of the 1906 trek made by Indians from Taos Pueblo to Blue Lake opens a window onto the significance of that glacial pool, from which current residents believe their earliest ancestors emerged. Nabokov's case for the return of the Black Hills to the Lakota and Cheyenne is based on his explication of a book of 400 drawings by an Oglala Sioux who, 100 years ago, depicted hills, caves, and rock art still considered sacred today. The author's careful documentation of unbroken reverence for these sacred places powerfully illuminates Native American attachment to the earth itself. Deborah Donovan

Court battles for Native sacred places

Peter Nabokov's WHERE THE LIGHTNING STRIKES: THE LIVES OF AMERICAN INDIAN SACRED PLACES surveys Native American culture and the myths and legends which have kept their close connections with the environment. Chapters are arranged by the four cardinal directions and use four major court cases in which Indians fought against destruction of key sacred places to bring together both past belief and modern controversies surrounding these places. There's a tendency to view Indians as 'ecological saints': WHERE THE LIGHTNING STRIKES takes a different approach, analyzing Indian environmental habits, spirituality and social issues as entwined facets of the whole.
