Excellent, unique presentation of the thought process. If everyone in the organization adopts the visually stimulating idioms suggested for each category of thought presented-- colored thinking hats, the group creative thought process can be managed much better and individuals guided into thought playing roles, without risk to their egos!
This book appears to be unfinished in the sense that the style is one of presenting a series of terse statement paragraphs with a liberal sprinkling of example paragraphs. A smooth transition between paragraphs is often missing--the book almost appears to be an organized presentation of the author's brainstorming sessions!
I personally found the book refreshing, thought provoking and timeless ( in the sense that anyone interested in managing creative thought will always be able to use the techniques presented).

simple, effective, 'short and sweet'

Edward De Bono guides you to a clearer way of thinking thru lateral thinking in his book the Six Thinking Hats. Amazon user jeffr265 could not have stated it better "The six thinking hats method is a simple and easy concept to understand and implement."

De Bono starts off by explaining to the reader why it's a challenge to become a thinker. This book is based on his six different approaches or ways of thinking, (referred to hats in the book) that people should use in order to fully view all issues. He refers the ways as hats so one can "put on" or switch from one approach to another easily. Each hat has a color that would help the reader visualize the approach/function. (ex: black- negative, yellow-positive and so on ) colors include white, red, black, yellow, green, and blue. Having everyone in a group wear the same type of hat helps the issues, meeting, be more non-confrontational, organized, an effective.

Overall the book is very well structured with plenty of examples. This made it very fun, easy to read and comprehend. The book is "short and sweet" it does not drag and cuts right to the point. This book helped me organize my thought and allowed me to view all aspects using the different hats when I'm approached with an issue. I defiantly recommend it for meetings, leaders, teams, management and you!

Color helps many people.

For many people color is a mnemonic device. For the purposes of this book, color is more. It is a signal and an idea. Bringing the concepts of thinking into hats and color for problem solving can help people who like to build cohesion and get along so that objectivity is easier. If nothing else, this book has inspired me to buy more hats. Another book I have about color is quite different about what colors do for us. Then there is the Irlen Institute. What does this do for people who are color blind?

Great read. A little short

Exactly like as the title says. It is a great read, but unfortunately the book will leave you wanting for more.

The Book of Nod presents the history of the vampires as thought for Vampire:The Masquerade. This novel can be enjoyed even by those that are not familiar with the Masquerade setting and other novels. It offers the big picture, explains how the vampires came to be, has great quotes and "commandments", if you will, that vampires are supposed to live by. You will understand the vampire clans and what their traits are and the reader is bound to have a favorite one out of the bunch.

About the Author
Clayton Mosher received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Toronto, and is currently a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Sociology at Washington State University Vancouver. He is the author of several books and articles in the areas of inequality in criminal justice system processing, drugs and drug policies, and the impact of prison construction on employment. Besides co-authoring the Second Edition of Drugs and Drug Policy, he co-authored the Second Edition of The Mismeasure of Crime (SAGE, 2012) with Terance Miethe and Timothy Hart.

Scott Akins received his Ph.D. in sociology at Washington State University in 2002 and is currently Associate Professor of Sociology at Oregon State University. His research interests include drug use and policy; immigration, drug use and crime; and the intersection of disadvantage, ethnicity, and crime. His recent work has been published in Justice Quarterly and the Journal of Drug Issues.

About the Author
Stanley Pollack began his career in the early 1970 s working with juvenile offenders in Trenton, NJ. From 1973 to 1082, as a youth worker and later as director of the Mayor s Office of Youth Services in Somerville, MA, he developed innovative methods for engaging youth in a process of creating positive change in their communities, the basis for the current Teen Empowerment Model. From 1982 to 1991, Mr. Pollock provided consultation in the model to more than 40 organizations, including City Year, the Food Project, Serve Houston, and the city of Boston s Community Centers. In 1992, he founded the Center for Teen Empowerment in Boston s South End/Lower Roxbury, an area that was plagued by serious problems with youth violence, gangs, and drugs. Guided by the model s community change strategy, neighborhood youth were hired to address these problems, forming a powerful group of young people that was able to forge a long-lasting peace agreement among warring factions. Teen Empowerment opened its first site in a Boston public school in 1994. The program now has six sites -- four in Boston, one in Somerville, and one in Rochester, NY and also provides consultation and training to a wide range of social, educational, and youth service agencies. Under Mr. Pollack s leadership, Teen Empowerment has engaged over 25,000 people in social change initiatives, and has involved hundreds of school faculty, police officers, and youth workers in training designed to improve their agencies ability to meet their goals. Mary Fusoni has taught English and reading skills at the high school level in Boston and Arlington, MA, and was a founding e=teacher of the Full Circle School, an alternative high school program in Somerville, MA. She has been working as a writer, editor, and administrator since 1980, initially as a technical writer for computer manuals. In 1989 she began providing administrative support for programs working with the Teen Empowerment Model. She wrote the grant proposal that earned ini6ial funding for the Center for Teen Empowerment, and has been the Center s documentation coordinator since 1992.

Most Useful Facilitation Book I Own

As a teacher, leader of youth development activities, and adult workshop leader, I have a shelf full of books on activities to get people to work together successfully. Since I bought Moving Beyond Icebreakers, it has become the resource I turn to constantly. The book's 300 activities are listed by goals such as trust-building, personal and group introspection, and understanding different perspectives. The format for each activity is very easy to follow, even for youth and adults who are just starting to lead activities. One of the most helpful features is the thoughtful questions to ask the group at the end of the activity in order to strengthen their learning and the group's ability to work together. The book is not only incredibly useful for its activities, but contains advice for structuring meetings and work sessions so that groups or classes successfully reach their goals in a lively and interactive way.

Invaluable Resource For Running Meetings

I am finding Moving Beyond Icebreakers to be an outstanding resource for running meetings at my medium-sized company where I'm a Project Manager. The book is unique in how it provides explanations on when to use different icebreaker activities - and more importantly, how to de-brief them afterwards. The title is accurate in that it does go way beyond simply being a list of icebreakers.

The book is extremely effective in a few different ways. There are the hundreds of icebreakers listed with clear explanations on how, when, and why to use them. But, Moving Beyond Icebreakers also really helps improve your entire approach and confidence level when it comes to meeting facilitation. And, the techniques for then using the icebreakers as the springboard into the substantive work you are trying to accomplish are perfect and easy to follow.

I have actually noticed an immediate improvement in the group dynamics with the staff on all of our projects - and our productivity has improved as a result of using these interactive exercises.

The book is well written, well organized with helpful illustrations and diagrams. You will find it to be a resource that you use all the time in planning and preparing for your company meetings.

Teacher of Youth and Adults

This book was really helpful to me in improving my public speaking skills and figuring out what to do with groups to get things moving when first working with them. This is a great resource for church, school, or any instructor. I owned the first version and this new one is much better and well laid out. I recommend it highly as a resource for any instructor.
