About the Author

Dr. Matthew Franchetti is an assistant professor of mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing engineering and the director of undergraduate studies of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Programs at The University of Toledo. He received his Ph.D. in 2003 and MBA in 2000 from The University of Toledo, has worked as an industrial engineer and technical manager for the U.S. Postal Service, and has extensive consulting experience in the automotive industry. Dr. Franchetti is a Certified Six-Sigma Black Belt from the American Society of Quality (ASQ) and has consulting and research experience with over 25 companies across the country. He has published over 60 books, articles, and conference proceedings in the field of industrial engineering.

Dale F. Eickelman is Ralph and Richard Lazarus Professor of Anthropology and Human Relations at Dartmouth College. He is the author of numerous books, including "The Middle East: An Anthropological Approach" and "Knowledge and Power in Morocco" (Princeton). Best Introductory Book

Whenever someone comes to me wondering where they should begin when it comes to studying modern politics with an eye towards Islam, I inevitably point them towards this volume.
One of the reasons that I do so is that, not only are the two authors widely respected in the field, the both come from different backgrounds. Piscatori I would roughly describe as a political scientist known for his work on Islam and the modern creation of the nation-state. Eickelman is a long established anthropologist who rose to fame working in the Maghreb. The resulting integration of both the politcal and the anthropological is about as ideal as one can get. Since Islamism has the fascinating quality of not being merely political but also being a religious movement employing and revolutionizing the use of tradition and cultural icons of Islamicity, the perspective of anthropology as a part of any attempt to grasp its dynamics I have found to be crucial.
Here, you won't find the top 10 terrorist hit-list or a chart graph of all the members of Hamas, but you find a much more profound and broader picture of how tradition, religion and modern politics intersect with multifarious results in numerous global regions and some of the mechanisms at work. In general, it is an excellent work for gaining the tools with which to critically approach such phenomena in various Muslim societies across the globe.

Fantastic Introduction to Muslim Politics, Theoretically Informed, Global in Scope

Finally here we have an introductory text to Muslim Politics that does not focus on the Arab world and treats what are in fact the more populous Muslim regions in South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Africa as the "Islamic periphery." Instead, the book recognizes these regions as being right at the core of Muslim politics. Readers are introduced to Muslim politics through the lens of a social science that treats Muslim politics as one among other political phenomena that can be studied and grasped with the tools and concepts of contemporary sociology, political science and the sociology of law. Readers are guided through the transformation of religious authority in the Muslim world, the emergence and political projects of Islamic movements, the diverse meanings of Islamic law and an Islamic state, the contextual notions of what is "the private" in Muslim societies, the transnational character of religious practice, and the use of Islam in struggles for political change, liberalization and democratization. A superb overview. Few other authors could provide it with such deep knowledge and such a wide variety of examples to draw on, from Senegal to Oman, Turkey to Indonesia, Turkmenistan to Tanzania, Lebanon to Malaysia. Emphatically recommended.

A balanced account of the subject. Perhaps 'too nice'

In Muslim Politics Dale Eickelman and James Piscatori have studied the idea of a Political Islam from a broad perspective. The title of the book itself betrays its breadth as it suggests, through the use of the plural 'politics' and the adjective Muslim - practitioner of Islam - rather than Islam itself, that Islam is a dynamic and evolving set of beliefs that have varied in time and space. This suggests that there can be no single explanation to account for the rise of Muslim politics and that a multiple criteria must be used to analyze the phenomenon. The book presents a number of arguments in its six chapters with examples from all over the Islamic world and among these are Tradition, Objectification and Fragmentation.
The authors challenge Modernization theory's contention that tradition is irreconcilable with social and political development and the idea that Islamic legal frameworks may not be altered as they have been conceived as a reflection of divine revelation. They also show that references to the Islamic past are used as rallying points or symbols from which to draw inspiration for change in the present. My main concern and the reason I have not awarded a full 5 stars is that the authors seem to neglect or have chosen to ignore the very real violence that radical islamists have caused. No mention of Algeria -90-present, Egypt and the numerous terror attacks of the last decade, the mindless policies these groups often support, the Taliabn and a host of other less than ideal versions - at best - and downright abominable conditions that prevail as a result of many Muslim Political interpretations.

Gr 7 Up—Freshman Daniel Pratzer has managed "to fly under the radar of the cool-and-cruel crowd." To break out of mediocrity, he joins the school's prestigious chess team. Daniel is a novice; in fact, the two team captains call him "Patzer-face" (a "patzer" meaning someone whose chess abilities are minimal). Daniel is shocked when he is asked to join the team at an important, weekend-long father-son tournament, and then he learns the truth. They want him for his father, a former prodigy who became a grandmaster at 16 but gave up the game due to stress. Daniel didn't even know his father could play. At his son's urging, Mr. Pratzer agrees to compete, and Daniel is surprised to see such a killer instinct in this meek, pot-bellied accountant. As the tournament begins to take a toll on his father's health and well-being, he begins to think that maybe skeletons are better left in the closet. Like a well-played chess game, drama unfolds deliberately as things progressively get worse, building up to an exciting, climactic endgame. Daniel is a likable, dorky kid, the underrated everyman with whom readers can empathize and cheer on. The characters reflect on what it means to be a winner, successful, or popular and to lose one's self to pressures from peers, parents, or competition. Great Story About Chess, Secrets and Father-Son Relationships

Daniel Pratzer is a new freshman at an exclusive private school. He has joined the chess team because it takes less time out of his needed studying time each week. He is surprised when the senior co-captains invite him and his father to a weekend parent-child tournament in New York City. Daniel is surprised to learn that his father is a chess Grandmaster who gave up chess thirty years before to save his own life and sanity.

At first, Daniel feels betrayed that there was so much he didn't know about his own father. But, when his father agrees to do the tournament weekend with him, they both embark on an adventure that reveals hidden secrets while deepening the relationship between the two of them.

Morris Pratzer encounters old enemies and very trying situations at the tournament while Daniel meets a girl who is also playing in the tournament. Liu is a smart-talking New Yorker. The two start as rivals and soon become friends.

One of the most interesting parts of the story for me was the dynamics between the father-son teams. The other fathers are a cardiac surgeon and a hedge fund manager. Morris is an accountant. The other sons are overachievers of one sort or another - swimming champion and class valedictorian. Daniel is really pretty average. He gets average grades and has average athletic ability. What he does have is a strong love for his father and strong sense of who he is. He has the security of knowing that he is loved and accepted for himself.

I loved the chess details that sprinkled the story and really felt the intensity of the tournament. Readers interested in chess or great stories about fathers and sons will not be disappointed with this fascinating story.

Awesome! I couldn't read this one fast enough. I loved the development of the father/son relationship, and even cheered myself several times. It did catch me by surprise a couple of times. But I'm always a sucker for a good family unification story!

Inner workings of chess

I am not a chess aficionado, so don't really even know why I bought the book. But it was good, and showed the workings of chess and chess competitions. Kids who are into chess, or chess club leaders would really enjoy it.

Sara Parkin is Founder Director of Forum for the Future, the UK's foremost sustainable development charity and a life-long campaigner for a socially and environmentally just way of life. She established the well regarded Leadership for Sustainable Development Masters at Forum and received an OBE in 2001 for services to education and sustainability. In the past Sara has played leadership roles in the UK and European Green Parties.

The Positive Deviant

This book by life long sustainability leader Sara Parkin is a must read for those who are concerned with humanities fate as we overwhelm our Earths capacity to support our material economies. We need to remember that human economics is a subset of ecology, and that the environment does not need saving - we do!

This book, written in the context of a Masters Leadership programme, sets out a sound theoretical frame, then moves to leadership training and onto pragmatic action for leaders at every level and scale. The scientific back story is clearly developed with appropriate citations.

Piece of hype and crap

No science, no considered opinions, just a bunch of business bashing, hysterical wailing. Don't bother.

If you want to read a good book on the subject read: The World in 2050: Four Forces Shaping Civilization's Northern Future.

I sent it back after trying to read the first chapter.
