About the Author
Martin Windrow is series editor at Osprey and an authority on the post-war French army, particularly the Foreign Legion. He is the author of the very successful Men-at-Arms 300: French Foreign Legion since 1945, and Men-at-Arms 322: The French War Indochina War 1946-54, and the critically acclaimed The Last Valley: Dien Bien Phu and the French Defeat in Vietnam (2004). Gerry Embleton has been a leading illustrator and researcher of historical costume since the 1970s, and has illustrated and written Osprey titles on a wide range of subjects for more than 20 years. He is an internationally respected authority on 15th and 18th century costumes in particular. He lives in Switzerland, where since 1988 he has also become well known for designing and creating life-size historical figures for museums.

Great Summary on Foreign Legion Since 1945

Martin Windrow hits another home run with this book. The Osprey format limits how in-depth an author can go on a topic but Windrow gives an excellent overview of the history of Le Legion since '45. It is enough to satisfy the neophyte. For the everyday military historian, it answers most of your questions; and probably will entice you into digging deeper into the history of the Legion.

Martin Windrow and the FFL how can you go wrong. I'll bet any one who has painted a FFL army used his books as a guide to painting FFL figures. I did. What more can I say.

Pornography continues to be great; Lacanians, bad; Freud, underrated; feminists, undersexed. Although her main essay "No Law in the Arena," is not as solid as "Junk Bonds and Corporate Raiders," the analysis of academe that anchored Sex, Art, and American Culture, many of her essays expand on her gritty common-sense understanding of the nasty realities of sex. Particularly good are "Rebel Love: Homosexuality"; "Lolita Unclothed" and "Woody Allen Agonistes." Paglia is at her bilious ad feminem best skewering one-time idol Susan Sontag in "Sontag, Bloody Sontag," or Catharine MacKinnon ("the dull instincts and tastes of a bureaucrat") and Andrea Dworkin ("The Girl with the Eternal Cold") in "The Return of Carry Nation." As usual, there's much about tabloid icons-Amy Fisher, Lorena Bobbit, Jackie O-but Paglia herself has become just such an icon, appearing in movies and TV specials whose transcripts she rather tediously includes. Still, when Paglia is good, she is palatable; when Paglia is bad, she's terrific. Author tour.

Paglia's overheated expostulations against censorship, "Stalinist feminists," and other bugbears of political correctness are interspersed with fierce arguments in favor of sexual license. Commenting on pop culture, she expounds her libertarian view, rejecting state regulation of abortion, prostitution, sodomy, drug use, and pornography, disdaining state "social-welfare meddling in public education" and "rigid antimale feminist ideology." For Paglia fans.

Those who missed them in Playboy, The New Republic, and other media can catch up with culture diva Paglia's latest performances here. The special effects are as spectacular as ever; the act, however, is getting old. As in her previous collection, Sex, Art, and American Culture (not reviewed), Paglia fills this volume with every magazine piece of hers from the last few years, transcripts of her TV appearances, an annotated bibliography of media references to her, and even a section of cartoons in which she was featured. Paglia's production is like a three-ring circus. There's competent journalistic cultural criticism on one side, encompassing appreciations of figures like Sandra Bernhard and Amy Fisher, and reviews of books by Madonna and Edward Said. Paglia's well-publicized polemic against feminist and gay movement dogma, which continues here, hasn't gained any subtlety. Her loose use of the opprobrium ``Stalinist'' will strike those misguided readers who take her essays on ``culture war'' topics seriously as genuinely offensive. In another ring, there's batty scholarship. A long essay written especially for this volume offers a ``pagan theory of sexuality'' for the contemporary world. Those seeking rigor will be warned off by the fact that Paglia's title for this piece is taken from dialogue in the movie Ben Hur. The really compelling action comes in the center ring, where the carnival of Paglia's construction of her own persona never stops. Her straightforwardly autobiographical writing is brilliant. One moving memoir celebrates the formative influence on her of four gifted and rebellious gay male friends; another hilariously revisits the promise and the pomposity of the Susan Sontag whom the young Camille Paglia idolized. Inspired by Sontag, Paglia exclaims that ``we need more women stars who can run their own studios!'' Paglia herself has become a star, and as such she inevitably fascinates. But she often seems miscast as an intellectual leader, mirroring as she does another aspect of her image of Sontag: ``no argument, only collage.'' -- Copyright �1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Paglia as performance artist; worthy addition

Quite simply, Paglia is one of the best literary/cultural critics of the past two decades. Her prose is jargon-free and perpetually potent; her subject range reveals perhaps the singlemost interdisciplinary mind of our generation. Unfortunately, her political "incorrectness" gives those unwilling to be challenged by her insights an excuse not to read her. The mere mention of her name in academic or women's studies circles is enough to insure condemnation of the offender--merely adding substance to her critique of the present state of these two institutions. She is both a shibboleth and a pariah. (I was publicly spanked for invoking her name at a national symposium; then later congratulated privately by several younger women.)
Paglia has many personae. "Vamps and Tramps" may be a suitable introduction for some but it is actually more appropriate for the initiated Paglia-ite. "Vamps" is the "rap-music," "performance-artist" Paglia; "Sex, Art, and Decadence" is the frequently provocative and compelling popular essayist; "Sexual Personae" is the prolix, Nietzschean original thinker; her study of Hitchcock's "The Birds" is the disciplined yet passionate and provocative scholar. Any of these latter three volumes would be preferable as a starter for the reader wishing to discover why Camille can credibly claim the top position among current literary scholars and cultural critics.

The world won't listen

Camille Paglia's image is a blessing and a curse. Like Chris Rock, she can get away with telling the truth about our repressed, hypersensitive culture. Unfortunately, her audience expects her to say shocking things, therefore her broadsides have lost some of their impact. Her enemies, the Mackinnons and Dworkins, won the culture wars long ago. Their beliefs are now written into law, taught in college and inscribed in police procedure manuals. Critics like Paglia are a recognized but ineffectual voice, easily dismissed by the establishment. For these reasons, Ms. Paglia's essays and journalistic pieces may be slightly disappointing. The interviews and transcripts, however, are the real pleasure; they recreate the "dissident feminist" at her fearless, truth-telling best.

The water enveloped her up to the waist, cool and comfortable. Kim dipped down until her head disappeared below the surface. The salt of the ocean seemed to vanish, and she emerged feeling clean. She gulped greedily as it streamed over her lips and roll down her fair skin into the low neckline of her dress. It felt so good, so relaxing, and for the moment, Kim didn't want to go back to Los Angeles. She didn't care about Eastern Capital or her career. All she wanted was fresh clean water beneath a jungle canopy.

"Tell me what you feel," Pete said. His voice was close, and she knew he was in the water with her, close enough to be heard over the waterfall.

"Cold and hungry," she said.

"No," he said. "That's your mind getting in the way. Tell me what your body feels."

"What do you mean?" she asked, speaking loudly to be heard over the rushing water that cascaded over her head.

"Don't think about what you want or need. Just listen to what your body is telling you, and describe it."

Kim tried to shut out her racing thoughts. Since she'd awoken, she had been worrying about what would happen to her. Now she simply concentrated on sensation. "The water rushing over my forehead is cold," she said. "It makes my skin feel tight and firm, and I'm covered in goose bumps."

In her mind, Kim followed the course of that water as it flowed down her neck and chest. She gasped. "My nipples are hard from the cold, but the water rolling past them feels good." Her breath caught in her throat, and she blushed. "It's making me kind of horny!"

"Now tell me again. How do you feel?" he said. His voice held an eager edge.

Kim remembered her earlier answer. Cold and hungry? No... "I feel alive!" she cried, laughing.

She remembered the twinkle in Pete's eye before, the look of a man with a secret. She was starting to suspect she knew what that secret was. When he put his hands around her waist, Kim wasn't surprised at all.

"I've done something for you," he said softly. "Now it's your turn."

Kim stepped out from beneath the waterfall and opened her eyes. Pete stood waist deep in front of her. He'd taken a dip himself, and his long wavy hair lay slicked back against his skull. She could see that beneath his unkempt hair, he was a very handsome man. She raised her face to his, and Pete kissed her with the same half-remembered tenderness of the night before. A Battlefleet Gothic must read

I loved this book. It was a page turner in every sense of the word. I particularly enjoy the events that take place planet side. The ship battles are well written, and well thought out.

The descriptions of the warships and the forces of chaos are vivid. The characters are entertaining, and colorful. The story moves along well, and builds up to an action packed ending that has the reader wondering how the crew is going to escape destruction.

One might argue that there is nothing new in the Warhammer 40k universe. Taken individually, each facet of the mytho can be traced to another sf or fantasy writer. Heinlein, Herbert, Asimov and other legends have all made contributions. Nope, nothing all that new.
So what! This initially mismatched collection of classic sci-fi, fantasy and alt history adds up to an extremely interesting universe. Then you remember that the whole thing was the result of a miniatures wargame. Pretty darn impressive when you view it that way.
Execution Hour is a fine effort to examine some varied aspects of the 40k universe. More precisely, it ties the relatively recent Battlefleet Gothic game to its venerable ancestor, War Hammer 40k.
Gordon Rennie gives us good characters, nice plot, fine exposition of various technical, social, metaphysical and psychological aspects of the universe. Against the broad canvas of a massive invasion by the seemingly irresistable forces of Chaos, the workings of a heretofore neglected segment of the great military machine of the Imperium, its Navy, are illustrated in detail.
Certainly, there are some sections which will leave the 40k neophyte scratching his or her head, but you don't need to be able to discriminate between an Adeptus and an Arcanus to enjoy the action and plot in this well crafted novel.

Excellent reading for Battlefleet Gothic players

Battlefleet Gothic is a spaceship wargame set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, making use of miniature model ships to simulate sweeping battles fought over the vast expanse of the galaxy. It is an attractive tabletop game offering a high degree of playability and excitement, and lots of colorful action.
Execution Hour vividly portrays the dramatic ship-to-ship battles and savage hand-to-hand fighting in the game setting. The writing conveys the sense of doom among the desperate defenders of the invaded world perfectly.
A minor criticism may be that the Chaos warships are too fragile in the story. Players of the Battlefleet Gothic game will know that Imperial torpedoes, attack crafts and gunfire are hardly so devastating, and Imperial ships are just a bit so sluggish in action. Ship-to-ship fight is often a rather inconclusive draw, and not so much of brilliant victory after victory as depicted in the book.
Nonetheless, the novel provides very good entertainment value to the game enthusiasts, and is probably one of the best among the Warhammer tie-in novels.

Based on eighteen months of participant-observer ethnographic fieldwork and ten years of follow-up research, the book argues that there is a fundamental disconnect between the Western idea of the child soldier and the individual lived experiences of the child soldiers of Sierra Leone. Susan Shepler contends that the reintegration of former child soldiers is a political process having to do with changing notions of childhood as one of the central structures of society.

For most Westerners the tragedy of the idea of “child soldier” centers around perceptions of lost and violated innocence. In contrast, Shepler finds that for most Sierra Leoneans, the problem is not lost innocence but the horror of being separated from one’s family and the resulting generational break in youth education. Further, Shepler argues that Sierra Leonean former child soldiers find themselves forced to strategically perform (or refuse to perform) as the“child soldier” Western human rights initiatives expect in order to most effectively gain access to the resources available for their social reintegration. The strategies don’t always work—in some cases, Shepler finds, Western human rights initiatives do more harm than good.

While this volume focuses on the well-known case of child soldiers in Sierra Leone, it speaks to the larger concerns of childhood studies with a detailed ethnography of people struggling over the situated meaning of the categories of childhood.It offers an example of the cultural politics of childhood in action, in which the very definition of childhood is at stake and an important site of political contestation.

One of the most important book on neurology in a decade.

For young research scientists who are interested in understanding the dynamics of the human brain, Koch's book provides the ideal introduction. Written in a precise yet easy style, the 21 Chapters of "Biophysics of Computation" begin at the beginning, introducing the reader to elementary electrical properties of membrane patches, linear cable theory, and the properties of passive dendritic trees. These introductory chapters are followed by two on the properties of synapses and the various ways that synapses can interact to perform logic on passive dendritic trees. Then the Hodgkin--Huxley formulation is discussed in detail, and various simplifying models are presented. As a basis for the Hodgkin--Huxley description, our present understanding of ionic channels is reviewed and the importance of calcium currents is emphasized. Further chapters discuss linearization of the H--H equations for small amplitude analysis, a careful examination of ionic diffusion, electrochemical properties of dendritic spines, synaptic plasticity, simple neural models, stochastic neural models. and the properties of bursting cells. Just about every facet of current neural knowledge is touched upon, with appropriate references to a carefully selected bibliography which will help the diligent novice delve deeply into whatever aspect of neural information processing that he or she chooses.
All of the above comprises an extended introduction to Chapters 17 through 19, which in the words of the author: "synthesize the previously learned lessons into a complete account of the events occuring in realistic dendritic trees with all of their attendant nonlinearities. We will see that dendrites can indeed be very powerful, nontraditional computational devices, implementing a number of continuous operations."
Thus "Biophysics of Computation" offers a definitive statement for the direction in which the neural research of the new century should go. Chapter 20, the penultimate, discussed several speculations for non-neural computation in the brain, ranging from molecular computing below the level of a single neuron to the effects of chemical diffusants (nitric oxide, calcium ions, carbon monoxide, etc.) on large numbers of neurons. Although this entire area has been neglected by the neuroscience community, Koch points out that there are no good reasons for doing so.
Finally, in the summary of Chapter 21, seven problems for future research projects are listed, emphasizing that the study of information processing in single neurons is very much a work in progress.

Excellent look at Neurophysics and Computatinal Processes of Neurons

I am still about 1 half a year away from having all of the math and biology needed to understand ALL of this book, but it's descriptions of single-unit computational processes are clear and easy to parse even without a the additional math and biology.

That said, this IS a book for professionals and students of Computational Neuroscience. It is not intended for a lay audience.

Bob Gottlieb is an organizer extraordinaire, a practical visionary and a tactical genius. When Friends of the Los Angeles River partnered with Occidental College for a year's worth of collaborative events, one of the great pleasures for me was working with Bob, who has an astonishing ability to work not just a system but all kinds of systems for the public good. progress in Los Angeles

This book helps to understand the grass roots movements that are happening all around LA. The culture of water and that of transportation throughout the greater Los Angeles region are better understood in this book that is part history and part social discourse. Los Angeles is a vastly misunderstood metropolis that is gradually coming out from under its stigma as a lost fantasy and emerging as a leader in the new urban environment.

Gottlieb is incredible! This easy to read book, was a requirement in one of my classes but honestly no need to require since its like reading a novel. What an awesome book!
