Please save your time and money and get the hardback/paperback version!!!
By Emmanuel Santiago
I've heard Liddon's eight sermons comprised in this book is a classic read. Unfortunately, the Kindle version is so badly converted into its digital format that one cannot even to begin to read let alone enjoy the book. It was a very dizzying and frustrating endeavor. It is very disappointing when people put out such product without care and consideration for its reader/customer. Consider getting the hardback/paperback version.

R is rapidly becoming the standard software for statistical analyses, graphical presentation of data, and programming in the natural, physical, social, and engineering sciences. Getting Started with R is now the go-to introductory guide for biologists wanting to learn how to use R in their research. It teaches readers how to import, explore, graph, and analyse data, while keeping them focused on their ultimate goals: clearly communicating their data in oral presentations, posters, papers, and reports. It provides a consistent workflow for using R that is simple, efficient, reliable, and reproducible.

This second edition has been updated and expanded while retaining the concise and engaging nature of its predecessor, offering an accessible and fun introduction to the packages dplyr and ggplot2 for data manipulation and graphing. It expands the set of basic statistics considered in the first edition to include new examples of a simple regression, a one-way and a two-way ANOVA. Finally, it introduces a new chapter on the generalised linear model.

Getting Started with R is suitable for undergraduates, graduate students, professional researchers, and practitioners in the biological sciences.

Category Theory for the Sciences (MIT Press), by David I. Spivak

Category theory was invented in the 1940s to unify and synthesize different areas in mathematics, and it has proven remarkably successful in enabling powerful communication between disparate fields and subfields within mathematics. This book shows that category theory can be useful outside of mathematics as a rigorous, flexible, and coherent modeling language throughout the sciences. Information is inherently dynamic; the same ideas can be organized and reorganized in countless ways, and the ability to translate between such organizational structures is becoming increasingly important in the sciences. Category theory offers a unifying framework for information modeling that can facilitate the translation of knowledge between disciplines. Written in an engaging and straightforward style, and assuming little background in mathematics, the book is rigorous but accessible to non-mathematicians. Using databases as an entry to category theory, it begins with sets and functions, then introduces the reader to notions that are fundamental in mathematics: monoids, groups, orders, and graphs -- categories in disguise. After explaining the "big three" concepts of category theory -- categories, functors, and natural transformations -- the book covers other topics, including limits, colimits, functor categories, sheaves, monads, and operads. The book explains category theory by examples and exercises rather than focusing on theorems and proofs. It includes more than 300 exercises, with solutions. Category Theory for the Sciences is intended to create a bridge between the vast array of mathematical concepts used by mathematicians and the models and frameworks of such scientific disciplines as computation, neuroscience, and physics.

Review
Spivak's book makes a good case that category theory...constitutes such a formalisation ofcommon sense, that it can help structure the thinking of the working scientist(or indeed any human being involved in intellectual activity), and, above all:that it is both possible and enjoyable to learn the basic notions of categorytheory without a substantial background in pure mathematics. The book explains, in a fluent, straightforward and pedagogical style, howthe basic principles of category theory are concepts we already know withoutadmitting it, shows how the theory unifies this implicit knowledge, and stressesthe advantage we can take from recognising and mastering the unifying concepts. --Joachim Kock, SIAM Book reviews

This is the first, and so far the only, book to make category theory accessible to non-mathematicians. Starting from the interesting new notion of 'ontological logs' (ologs), the basic concepts of category theory are then introduced where and when needed, inspired by applications.

(Piet Hut, Professor of Astrophysics and Head of the Program in Interdisciplinary Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton)

Category theory was invented in the middle of the last century with the goal of better connecting algebra with topology. It has since produced a network of connections between all branches of mathematics as well as between mathematics, sciences, and engineering. This book introduces basic categorical ideas from a variety of simple examples. The author writes in clear, direct, and imaginative language. His ologs make me believe in universal knowledge, from physics and chemistry to biology and computer sciences. Abstractions are made concrete and useful. You will travel from databases to the category of categories and beyond.

(Andr Joyal, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada)

Category theory has long been recognized as a powerful tool for unifying different branches of pure mathematics, but its potential for applications has barely begun to be tapped. Twenty years from now there will be lots of books on applied category theory, but their authors will all have read Spivak.

(John Baez, Professor of Mathematics, University of California, Riverside)

This book is the first in its field to demonstrate the power of category theory as a tool for applied scientists and engineers. A fantastic introduction to the theory as well as all the information needed to make it directly usable by non-mathematicians. A remarkable piece of work.

(Stephen Molloy, Head of Accelerator Engineering for the European Spallation Source, and Adjunct Lecturer in Accelerator Physics, University of Lund, Sweden)

This is a great book not only for the scientist who wants to learn Category theory, but for the mathematician as well.

(Nick Scoville MAA Reviews)

From the Author
This book is designed to be read by scientists and other people. It has very few mathematical prerequisites; for example, it doesn't require calculus, linear algebra, or statistics. It starts by reintroducing the basics: What is a set? What is a function between sets?

That said, having a teacher or resident expert will be very helpful. Category theory is a "paradigm shift"---it's a new way of looking at things. If you progress past the first few chapters, you'll see that it's a language for having very big thoughts and making unusually deep analogies.

To make real progress in this book (unless you're used to reading university-level math books on your own) it will be useful to periodically check your understanding with someone who has some training in the subject. Seek out a math grad student or even a Haskell expert to help you. A growing number of people are learning basic category theory.

In order to really learn this material, a formal teacher or a professor would be best. Encourage your local university math department to offer a course in Category Theory for the Sciences. I can recommend this in good faith, because I went to special efforts to make this book available for free online. An old version of the book exists on the math arXiv, and a new MIT Press-edited version exists in HTML form on their website (see URLs below). That said, the print version, available here on Amazon and elsewhere, is much easier to read, if you want to get serious and you can afford it.

This book contains about 300 exercises and solutions. For those who wish to teach a course in the subject, there are 193 additional exercises and solutions behind a professors-only wall on the MIT Press website (see URL below). You simply have to request access.

To everyone: I hope you enjoy the book, and get a lot out of it!

Category Theory is as important to science as calculus

Great book especially since you need not pay for it. See http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-s996-category-theory-for-scientists-spring-2013/textbook/MIT18_S996S13_textbook.pdf

Good Examples, Suitable for Non-Mathematicians
By Arnold Doray
Pros:
* Has lots of examples/questions with solutions, which help you clearly understand the concepts being discussed,
* Spivak builds up concepts gradually with lots of worked out examples,
* Requires little by way of mathematical background. Very suitable for non-mathematicians or those with basic mathematical background.
* An early version is available online in PDF format, so you can evaluate before buying. The book contains solutions after every "exercise", not so for the PDF.

Cons:
* Much of the early part of the book is motivated by "ologs", which I feel have doubtful utility in practical science. I feel this detracts from the overall presentation.
* The book takes a long time to actually introduce Categories, because Spivak takes the time to introduce mathematical background. However, this forces the reader wade through a lot of material, which is likely unfamiliar to his target audience and -- I feel -- is less useful in actually understanding Category theory. Overall, I found this "bottom-up" pedagogical approach makes it quite hard to see the forest (broad ideas & thrust of category theory) for the trees (a multitude of newly introduced concepts).

I gave up reading Spivak after Chapter 3 and switched to Awodey's excellent Category Theory book. Awodey's approach is "top-down", introducing categories almost immediately then examples to flesh out the concepts. It has a far more abstract and intuitive flavor in its presentation compared to Spivak, which is what I like most about it. However, it is also much denser than Spivak, and is a far more challenging read, but should still be accessible to anyone with first year college-level exposure to abstract algebra.

By Peter
Seen through the eyes of a scientist and engineer category theory is a theory of connections. It provides a framework for organizing concepts that helps to orient the practitioner who is confronted with a system she wishes to model.

This book is the first attempt I am aware of that anchors categorical concepts into a context familiar to scientists. This is the pedagogy that is necessary but not sufficient for exposing the elegance of category theory to a scientific audience. This anchoring must also be faithful to the elegant tapestry of category theory. How this should be done is not immediately obvious as category theory is a vast framework not easily deconstructed.

Borrowing from a long tradition of teaching category theory to mathematicians David has reinvented the pedagogy by engaging with a community outside his own. This is both courageous and humbling.

Thank you for your efforts.

Berlin. 1960. In America, Nixon loses to Kennedy, and Elvis Presley's "It's Now Or Never" tops the charts. In Hamburg, the Beatles record Gershwin's "Summertime" with Ringo and discover the Herbertstrasse. But in Berlin, Lutheran pastor Guenter Rutenborn struggles with the legacy of the Third Reich, and the significance of man's inhumanity to man. Who's to blame? Some say Hitler. Some say the German people. Some say God. Rutenborn writes a drama that puts God on trial. The angels and the Queen of Babylon are called as witnesses, and God is convicted. You will be, too.

"And Who Shall Stand....?"
By larry rathbun
While an extraordinary reaction by a wartime pastor to man's inhumanity to man, with (spoiler here) an interesting twist to the reason for Christ's appearance in the world, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping for re-assurance of purpose from an omnipotent God of intention. In all fairness however, within the limitations of a theatrical play, Rutenborn brilliantly manages to involve the audience in exploring their own violated sense of justice. In the final analysis, his pastoral attempt to help humanity explore the nature of God in The Sign of Jonah is both successful and satisfying. Consider as a" read".

Short but impactful.
By Joy
Loved it and still love it. I have read it several times (only 75 pages) and still cannot get through the ending without choking up. When no one wants to take the blame for all the evil mankind is capable of, even ourselves, we end up shaking our fist at God and blaming Him. This play reveals in such an artful and beautiful way, that we have a God who, although is NOT to blame, willingly takes the blow we deserve. Can't say anymore.....a must read

Realize its background
By Hugh S. Barbour
When Berlin was under Stalin, a brave pastor updated its struggle for honesty under both Nazis and Comnunists by a parable
of Jonah's call on Nineveh to repent through sharing in a "trial," where God himself is accused and answers by his Son's death.

PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST
ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW'S 10 BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR
WINNER OF THE KIRKUS PRIZE

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and bestselling author of Backlash, comes In the Darkroom, an astonishing confrontation with the enigma of her father and the larger riddle of identity consuming our age.

“In the summer of 2004 I set out to investigate someone I scarcely knew, my father. The project began with a grievance, the grievance of a daughter whose parent had absconded from her life. I was in pursuit of a scofflaw, an artful dodger who had skipped out on so many things―obligation, affection, culpability, contrition. I was preparing an indictment, amassing discovery for a trial. But somewhere along the line, the prosecutor became a witness.”

So begins Susan Faludi’s extraordinary inquiry into the meaning of identity in the modern world and in her own haunted family saga. When the feminist writer learned that her 76-year-old father―long estranged and living in Hungary―had undergone sex reassignment surgery, that investigation would turn personal and urgent. How was this new parent who identified as “a complete woman now” connected to the silent, explosive, and ultimately violent father she had known, the photographer who’d built his career on the alteration of images?

Faludi chases that mystery into the recesses of her suburban childhood and her father’s many previous incarnations: American dad, Alpine mountaineer, swashbuckling adventurer in the Amazon outback, Jewish fugitive in Holocaust Budapest. When the author travels to Hungary to reunite with her father, she drops into a labyrinth of dark histories and dangerous politics in a country hell-bent on repressing its past and constructing a fanciful―and virulent―nationhood. The search for identity that has transfixed our century was proving as treacherous for nations as for individuals.

Faludi’s struggle to come to grips with her father’s metamorphosis takes her across borders―historical, political, religious, sexual--to bring her face to face with the question of the age: Is identity something you “choose,” or is it the very thing you can’t escape?

Review

“This book is a masterpiece.”
―Ann Patchett

“In the Darkroom is an absolute stunner of a memoir―probing, steel-nerved, moving in ways you’d never expect. Ms. Faludi is determined both to demystify the father of her youth―‘a simultaneously inscrutable and volatile presence, a black box and a detonator’―and to re-examine the very notion and nature of identity.”
―The New York Times (daily review)

“Penetrating and lucid . . . In the Darkroom is Faludi’s rich, arresting, and ultimately generous investigation of her father.”
―The New York Times Book Review (front page)

“A searching investigation of identity barely disguised as a sometimes funny and sometimes very painful family saga. . . .Faludi is a mercilessly droll and careful writer. The emotional incontinence and narcissism that pass for insight and power in memoirs these days is not for her. . . .All the same, I cried quite often as I read her book, and at [one] point, I had to go off and stare at some flowers for a while. . . . An out-and-out masterpiece of its kind.”
―The Guardian (UK)

“Faludi's remarkable, moving and courageous book is extremely fair-minded all the way through.”
―The Guardian, (U.S. edition)

“It’s a gripping and honest personal journey―bolstered by reams of research―that ultimately transcends family and addresses much bigger questions of identity and reinvention.”
―Entertainment Weekly

“Many great writers eventually turn to biography, but rarely does it so directly crash into their lifelong intellectual pursuits. . . . very few can dissect a prevailing cultural norm as well as Faludi can.”
―The Washington Post

“In this riveting book about a very complicated subject, Ms. Faludi . . . does a remarkable job tracking down the truth about her father, a person of multiple and contradictory identities . . . Ms. Faludi unfolds her father’s story like the plot of a detective novel.”
―The Wall Street Journal

“Moving . . . In the Darkroom is Faludi’s emotionally harrowing quest to understand her dad
. . . Faludi presents her father’s surgery in the context of a complicated, lifelong, protean search for identity.”
―Newsweek

“Faludi’s eloquent, timely, and sweeping-yet-intimate new book . . . is a mash-up of genres and themes about family secrets, masculinity and femininity, feminism, violence, the Holocaust, taking revenge. Knitting it all together are questions of identity: Who?or what?makes us who and what we are? How immutable is the end result?”
―Elle

“In the Darkroom is an intensely personal journey for Faludi, and despite the intimate subject matter, she never loses her reportorial edge. . . . Through [her father’s] experiences, Faludi explores the larger questions of transgender politics and sexual identity in a nation whose past has detrimentally shaped its present. In the process, the hard-nosed reporter and feminist is forced to reevaluate the identity she has built as retaliation against an abusive and domineering father.”
―Shelf Awareness

“Wow. Susan Faludi's new book is so good. Like a really dry martini. Pow!”
―The Observer (UK)

“Astonishing, unique . . . should be essential reading.”
―The Irish Independent

“A classic autobiographical quest. . .Especially pertinent reading in these, our own dark times, when questions of identity keep coming to the fore, as matters of life and death.”
―NPR, Fresh Air (Maureen Corrigan)

“Ultimately this book is an act of love . . . a fascinating chronicle of a decade spent trying to understand a parent who had always been inscrutable.”
―The Economist (UK)

“Susan Faludi weaves together these strands of her father’s identity – Jewishness, nationality, gender – with energy, wit and nuance. . . . It is rare to read anything about anti-Semitism or transgender issues that works so hard to forgo polemic in favour of understanding. . . . Faludi has paid her late father a fine tribute by bringing her to life in such a compelling, truthful story.”
―New Statesman (UK)

“Impressive. . .Sometimes reality delivers up not just a remarkable story, but a remarkable story containing a set of parallel motifs that seem too absurdly perfect to be credible. . .the epic battle, and eventually the epic rapprochement, between Susan and [her father] Stefánie?an irresistible force meeting an immovable object. . . .As impossible as her father is, Susan comes to recognize and feel compassion for the bewildering and titanic forces, inside and out, that batter Stefánie’s psyche.”
―Slate

“A wrought and multi-layered memoir . . . Powerful and absorbing.”
―Publishers Weekly (starred)

“Moving and penetrating . . . A gripping exploration of sexual, national, and ethnic identity.”
―Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“Extraordinary: part riveting family memoir, part revelatory Holocaust history, but most of all a profound meditation on human identity. . . . In the Darkroom is nothing if not timely. It is also highly significant. . . .We live in an age overflowing with bitter battles over identity?with too little of Susan Faludi’s humane desire to understand.”
―National Book Review

“A record of Stefanie Faludi's extraordinary life, and an unsettling interrogation of that modern obsession, identity. . . .Few have asked these questions with such riveting precision.”
―The Spectator (UK)

“In the Darkroom is a unique, deeply affecting and beautifully written book, full of warmth, intelligence and. . .humour. It makes a flawless weave of biography and autobiography with an examination of identity politics, Hungarian history, the Holocaust and the reparable bond between parent and child.”
―The Saturday Paper (Australia)

This is not a simple, loving memoir about a beloved father, but rather about a father who seemingly was at war with the world, including the world of his family. Faludi's father, born in Budapest in 1927 as Istvan Friedman, and died in Budapest in 2015, reinvented as Stephanie Faludi. It was the life between the birth and death that Susan Faludi writes about.

Istvan Friedman seemed to be a man who lived a life with few "constants". Born of Jewish parents in inter-war Hungary, he was not close to his parents, though he rescued them in 1944 in Budapest when they had been taken by the Arrow Cross. After living through WW2, he touched down in Copenhagen and Brazil before settling in New York City, where he changed his name to Steven Faludi, married and raised a family in 50's, 60's, before being divorced in the mid-1970's. Susan's home life while growing up with him in the house was volatile, to say the least. Father and daughter split for many years after Susan became an adult and Steven moved back to Budapest. In 2004, she received an email saying that "Steven Faludi" was now "Stephanie Faludi" - her father had had a sex-change operation in Phuket, Thailand. In the years between 2004 and Stephanie's death, Susan and her father tried to understand each other. She spent time with him in Budapest, where the two wandered the city as Susan attempted to recreate her father's life in understandable fashion.

From my reading of the memoir, Stephanie Faludi seemed to be a person in a lifelong search of his identity. Was he Jewish? He married a Jewish woman in a temple, but raised his two children without much Jewish knowledge; instead celebrating with a passion the major Christian holidays. Was he a man or a woman? Was he a Hungarian, despite the persecution Jews in Hungary had long endured? Even the title of the book, "In the Darkroom", which alludes to Steven Faludi's career in photography and to the Photoshop-like changes he was able to make to pictures, also seems to refer to the permutations he makes to his life.

Susan Faludi's book is about many things. Assimilation, the trans-gender movement, father-daughter relationships, even the history of Hungary. But most of all it is a story of a daughter trying to understand a father, who is trying to understand himself. It's a beautifully written book.

This is simply one of the best books I've read in a very long while
By Pamela Mccorduck
This is simply one of the best books I've read in a very long while. It was presented to the public as something sensational--middle aged woman finds her elderly father has had a sex change operation--well, that's sensational, no question. Who wouldn't ask themselves what if? But Faludi takes this dramatic event as an occasion to explore the psychological complexities of individual identity. Her transsexual father is an emblem of how fluid identity is, and how it gets formed not only by individual agency, but also by inexorable historical, outside events. She combines meticulous historical research with personal experience, and the result is an extraordinary book. I recommend it without reservation.

As engrossing as a mystery novel, yet history larger than the story of one person
By ObsessiveReader
Susan Faludi writes honestly about an intensely dishonest person - her father, who, late in life chose to undergo gender reassignment surgery. While the story is primarily about the author's experiences as she attempts to understand and learn about her father, it is also a deft linking of larger historical currents - the Jews in Hungary, the sexual stereotyping of postwar North America, and the Shoah. The sections on the Faludi family also show the seeds of Faludi's own feminism, and how it was forged by her father with his relentless insistence on taking gender stereotypes to ridiculous and painful lengths in order to promote his own highly insecure self image.

I've always been intrigued by Buda Pest ever since I read John Lukacs "Budapest 1900" a book that Faludi mentions in her text. She spends time exploring the city in which her father grew up, and for anybody trying to understand how this once backwater city came to rival Paris for a brief time prior to WWI you could not read a better book.

I do not disagree with the reviewer who makes the point that Faludi's father tried to get her to write "his" side of the story. However I also think that while it would have been impossible for the author to uncover all of his deceptions, she creates enough of a sense of Stephen/Stephanie so that we know that there was no way anybody -- not even this gifted journalist -- could uncover the entire story. An amazing book.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Recruited by the F.B.I. as an urban warrior, 17-year-old McCutcheon "M.D." Daniels is a martial-arts phenom fighting gang violence in his Detroit hometown. In this sequel to Caged Warrior (Disney-Hyperion, 2014), M.D. is lured out of the Witness Protection Program to infiltrate a prison, and knock off "The High Priest," leader of the Detroit gang responsible for numerous atrocities of domestic terrorism and forcing M.D.'s family into hiding. Disconnected from his girlfriend, Kaitlin, M.D. fears for her safety and accepts the (supposedly) three-day mission at Jentles Penitentiary, (or "D.T" Devil's Toilet), which houses the most notorious felons in Michigan, including M.D.'s own dead-beat father. Once inside, it becomes clear to readers that M.D. has an ulterior motive for wanting "in," and that his mentor, Colonel Stanzer, may have purposely arranged this as a no-return suicide mission for the teenager whose ethics often get in the way of F.B.I. goals. Captive, and at the mercy of his conniving father and crooked guards, M.D. relies on martial arts strategies to stay calm, focused, and alert. Gritty fighting details keep the well-paced drama flowing, and it is suspenseful to the end as obstacles mount for M.D.'s possible escape, and motives of minor characters seem to add up to an ultimate betrayal for the teen. Some raw language and situational violence inherent in urban gang warfare juxtaposes M.D.'s strong moral values, for even more hero appeal. VERDICT Not just for martial-arts fans, but for all teen readers who thrive on roller-coaster action and drama.—Vicki Reutter, State University of New York at Cortland

Review
A teenage mixed martial arts genius works covert ops for the U.S. government. It's been 10 months since the witness protection program whisked McCutcheon "M.D." Daniels and his little sister away from their miserable lives in Detroit. In that time, M.D. has been working with the military, training in the arts of black ops, and occasionally going into the field and using his unique set of skills to catch predators. Meanwhile, back home, the Priests have targeted M.D.'s abandoned flame and his father in efforts to draw the boy that got away out from hiding. It all comes to a head with an undercover M.D. entering Jentles State Prison, a facility notorious for breaking prisoners beyond imagination. Sitomer's Caged Warrior (2014) was an exciting action thriller that leaned into its darkest elements in smart, interesting ways. Unfortunately this sequel can't pull off the same balancing act. This scenario involving top-secret government agencies and Supermax prisons is completely removed from the reality established in the previous book. Instead of escalating the stakes, the author has blown them up to comic-book levels. When everything is so big and so tough and so gritty and so violent, there's no room for hope, nor is there much room for reader engagement. The book concludes with a beat that feels cribbed from The Shawshank Redemption and a hint at further books. Few readers will want to follow. A sequel that destroys the goodwill established by its predecessor. (Thriller. 12-16) Kirkus"

Gritty, fast-paced, and will leaving you guessing until the end
By JessicaCoffee
4.5 stars*

Noble Warrior was a gritty, fast-paced read that kept me turning pages into the wee hours of the morning. (Fights! Bang! Boom! Mean people! Everybody fend for themselves! Jerk faces galore!!! MOAR fighting! Liars! BIG FIGHT!) I had no idea until about halfway through Noble Warrior that it was book two in a series! Nevertheless, book one wasn't really needed to read NW, as Mr. Sitomer tied everything together well with quick explanations here and there—there was never long backstory or anything.

As for the premise of Noble Warrior, the blurb pretty much explains it all. What you don’t expect, however, is 1) how graphic it’ll be and 2) how much you’re going to continually question everything. I was never completely sure who was actually on Daniels’ side up to the very end! So many characters turned out to be different people than I thought they were! The constant back and forth is one of the things that kept me turning the pages. I loved that about NW. I *had* to know what was going to happen next.

Speaking of what was going to happen, the ending surprised me. I don’t want to say anymore than that, because spoilers, but man, that one turn kinda made me sad. Was it a set up for book three? Yeah. But still. :(

(Am I going to read the next book? Heck yes.)

If you like vivid descriptions, martial arts, frank talk between guys, and enjoy reading about gang and FBI politics, OR are looking for something different and bold, I highly recommend Noble Warrior.**

* I received an ARC of Noble Warrior from a blogger friend. Thanks, Jen! :D

** Though the MC was of normal YA character age, due to graphic violence, crude language, and sexual references, I’d say Noble Warrior is most definitely for *mature* YA audiences only.

Someone needs to tell Mr. Sitomer that sequels are not supposed to be better than the original. This book kept me glued to my chair on a beautiful summer's day and made me sad when I reached the last page because it was over. Action lurks in almost every single page of this realistic tale. I think that many middle school students could handle this book socially, but I agree the target audience is high school. This book includes gangs, gang leaders, prisoners that could not be trusted, and even questions certain undercover government agents' verity. Often the reader is left wondering who to trust. Urban life in Detroit is scary. Here he portrays life in the bankrupt city that cuts back on police protection for budgetary reasons. It shows crooked guards cooperating with crooked detectives. There are so many conflicts within the various story lines that discussions could run forever. I have yet o read a Sitomer book that disappointed me even slightly, but this is one of his best.

Chapter by Chapter's Review of Noble Warrior
By MaryAnn
As somebody who only read the description for author Alan Lawrence Sitomer’s Noble Warrior, I was pretty intrigued. The premise sounded like Prison Break with a teenager and a lot more mixed martial arts. As somebody who has been practicing MMA for almost six years, I was hyped up to get reading a novel about a badass teen who will kick some serious ass. What I didn’t know was that Noble Warrior was a sequel (oops) but rest assured to anyone who reads this review and is interested in skipping Caged Warrior—you can definitely read Noble Warrior as a stand-alone.

In Noble Warrior our main character McCutcheon Daniels has been placed in the Witness Security Program alongside his once-absent mother and the light of his life, his younger sister. McCutcheon has dedicated his entire life to supporting his younger sister and giving her everything that she needs. Upon entering the Witness Security Program, M.D. has given up the girl he loves and the life he had as an underground fighter. Newly recruited into the F.B.I. as a unique soldier, McCutcheon begins tracking down the ‘bad guys’ and performing top secret missions within the Bureau.

However when he finds out that in his hometown of Detroit that the city’s reigning criminal organization—the Priests—have McCutcheon’s girl, Kaitlyn, he’s made a deal: Enter the Jentles State Prison where the Priests’ boss is being detained and take him out, and his girl goes free. What once seemed like a simple mission is proven to be far more heinous and secretive than M.D. could even begin to imagine. And within the prison, McCutcheon is reunited with his father. The man who he’s despised for his unfair treatment of both himself and his sister. Now trapped within a prison that threatens to devour him, McCutcheon begins to plot his escape.

What I enjoyed most about Noble Warrior was most likely the writing style. It was very fluent and consistent and made it easy to tap into McCutcheon’s brain and determine the setting through his eyes. McCutcheon himself is a very unique character. He’s your typical overprotective big brother, sure, but he’s also a total badass. And unlike most badass hotties in the YA-verse, McCutcheon would never dream of sacrificing the people closest to him for love or anything of the like. He’s a very complex character and one who is without question one of the ‘good’ guys. I loved him. And I imagined that he was particularly muscular… Always an additional bonus, you know?

Throughout Noble Warrior there is constant action and plot twists. Whenever the narrative begins to reach a lull, you can quickly find the novel snapping back to its previous fast pace. Personally, I wasn’t the greatest fan of the curved pacing in Noble Warrior, but there is no denying that the story itself is very original and action-packed. The way that Noble Warrior is written and the way it flows makes me wish that I had read Caged Warrior in order to see just what it is that McCutcheon went through before this novel.

The realism in Noble Warrior is a bit questionable, but it is fiction and is definitely the kind of novel that could be placed on par with the likes of Sin City. There is no ignoring the fact that Noble Warrior is placed in a dark world with crude intentions. Readers question both their morality and McCutcheon’s own when he’s faced with possibly breaking his ‘no killing’ rule. My only real issue with the novel would be the constant reaffirmation that McCutcheon is a warrior. If I had a dime for each time it was reiterated, I’d probably have a bill in my wallet.

I would recommend Noble Warrior to any readers who are looking for (as stated above) a novel that is all about action. I think that plenty of male readers will fall in love with this novel as it’s thick with testosterone. Any readers who are looking for a tale filled with betrayal, thrills, and mystery should also give Noble Warrior a go.

About the Author
Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824) Born of poor parents in northern Germany, Anne Emmerich joined a convent at the age of 28, after years of working as a seamstress and servant. As a nun of the Order of St. Augustine, she eventually was confined to her bed due to failing health. She spontaneously displayed the stigmata (the wounds of Jesus on her hands and side), and was subject to extended visions of the life of Jesus. Her visions were recorded by the poet Klemens Maria Brentano, and published after her death in three books: The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ (1833), The Life of The Blessed Virgin Mary (1852), and The Life of Our Lord (1858-80). She has been pronounced "Venerable" by the Catholic church, an advanced step on the path to sainthood
