Two young seeksmen are dead, and Sydney blames herself. The only way to get her sister back from the county’s clutches, while also preventing more death, was to offer her own life in exchange for Evvie’s freedom.
She expected a dreadful end, but nothing like the prison in which she wakes. Agonizing county life is redefined in Neo-Necropolis, new city of the dead, which lies beneath the earth. Worse than being allegedly deceased, is the false identity Sydney is forced to assume where Evvie, Sheridan’s captain, and Crewe never existed.
Sydney alone knows the magnitude of the county’s evildoings inside, outside, and now below. At only eighteen, the responsibility to defend freedom falls solely on her tried and tested shoulders—a burden that requires desperate action when a catastrophic revelation upends the world as she knew it.
The people Sydney cares for are more vulnerable than ever. Though she’s buried underground and monitored by county agents, she must escape this new captivity. Maybe it’s time to fight fire with fire. Sydney has proven her courage in facing their weapons, but can she trigger her own?

Review
Arrowsmith takes the reader on a tumultuous emotional journey as she vividly describes the protagonist, Sydney’s emotional attachment to her only living and real loved one. Little does she know, when she thought her greatest hurdle of regaining custody over her little sister was overcome, that it would only be the beginning of her perils.
This novel highlights the effortless love of two brave sisters. In their quest to find out the truth about their mother, they become encapsulated in a whole new world they thought could have never existed.
Their happiness, if there was any, was short-lived by the traumas of living in a time when the authorities have too much control over everything.
By the end of the book, Sydney and her sister become your friends. You feel for them both and realize ultimately the power of love, and the sacrifices that some are willing to make to protect their loved ones.
Arrowsmith truly embodies all the emotions we as humans feel and she brings to life her characters realistically and believably.
At the end, like any good book, Arrowsmith leaves you wanting more! Truly an amazing read!

How do I even start? I would love to glow about all of my favorite parts but there is no way I want to give away even a moment of the story. This one has so many twists, details, and surprises that I'd be far too at risk of a spoiler, so I'll simply say that the book will grab you and hold you to the very end.
Arrowsmith did a fantastic job in developing very real and likable characters, not an easy task when telling a tale from a first person, present tense perspective (which is challenging enough in its own right!). Her attention to the detail, technology, and politics of the worldframe makes for a very realistic read, as does her utilization of real world environs.
I will, however, mention my favorite part: the ultimate reveal of why the government came to be the way it is in this novel. A truly unique approach to setting up a dystopian storyline that, while not really stated until toward the end of the book, had me grinning and nodding evilly because it was so simple and perfect.
This is the first book in a series, and I cannot wait to read the next one, especially with the cliffhanger that CitS leaves the reader with. No matter how fast it comes out, it will feel like a very long wait!

~~~~Escape from Neo-Necropolis~~
By USN Chief, Ret..VT Town
Sydney finds herself in Neo-Necropolis and tries to ascertain the difference between the five levels. The first book in this series stated that the Nation is now divided into twelve regions. This story takes place in Region 2. The "powers to be" have all sorts of nasty schemes to keep the inhabitants in order. One of those devices is termed a recall inhibitor and is used frequently. Sydney is placed on Level three and must work to earn points.
Evvie, her sister, is back with their dad in Sheridan and this is when the story takes a twist and turn. An escape is planned from Neo-Necropolis with the assistance of a few of the others being held there.
The ending leaves the reader wondering about the fates of several of the key members. I found it to be an interesting read and if you enjoy dystopian stories, check this one out!
Highly recommended.
Three Stars...
I probably would have given the book four stars, but there were a few things that irked me about the story line. There were many unanswered questions, that didn't necessarily need to be left hanging in this story, especially considering the next book will be a while. It was kind of like the author wasn't certain how she wanted to answer those questions yet, so she didn't (namely, what happened to Edyn). Some of the characters that arrived at the end of the book weren't explained well, and just kind of dropped off at the end of the book, I suppose this is because their only purpose was to beef up the population of Sheridan.
I'm trying to keep from adding spoilers in here, but I think a few might slip out, so beware.
Edyn's gift was a clever addition to an otherwise very reality (though dystopian) based book, however, the valid information gathered using this gift wasn't shared in a way that progressed the story, making said gift rather pointless to include in the story line - other than to tell readers that help was coming. Foreshadowing in this book seemed forced.
Moving on to the good points. I really like Sydney's character. I have seen some people complain about her occasional tantrums, but these don't bother me. She's an 18 year old who grew up quickly and has a distinct set a values that have been molded due to the duty to her sister. I get that, and I also get that an 18 year old girl without a proper upbringing may throw an immature tantrum from time to time. It makes logical sense.
Crewe irritates me a little bit, but I like him for this story, and I think his character is going to get even better in the coming books. I can see how much the author has improved between the last book and this one, and am looking forward to witnessing the books get even better going forward.
I certainly do recommend this series. It's quick and it does draw you in. I'm still going forward with book three.
