You can't tell a book by it's cover

The outside as well as pages arrived to me in rather good condition however there was a sneezy surprise, once I examined the pages I notice close to 90% of them are plastered in highlighter fluid. Not one word was safe from the previous owners marker. This does not take away from the overall experience of the book but was an unexpected surprise that only stands out as a blemish. That is why I decided to rate my experience as a 3, be weary of this seller as you don't know what he has in store for you.

Decent for your students, even good in spots, but not quite it

Positives:
Rich variety of related readings--poems and prose (including a great Richard Armour send-up of much of the play)
Good reflection questions
A map of Italy
An age-appropriate overview of the Globe Theater, Shakespeare, and Elizabethan times
The whole play--no bowdlerization

Negatives:
Delicate binding--there's no way this book can go home with students; the spine is just glue that cracks after a few readings
Delicate footnotes--none of the sexual puns (and they are legion) are even alluded to
Some minor textual changes (Capulet, instead of saying "How, how, how, how, what's this, choplogic?" says "How now, how now, what's this, chopped logic?"; substitution of "and" for "an" ["if"]).

I really like the Maynard Mack/Heinemann version of the play--this one, as well as Hamlet and Othello. They are superb student texts, as are the Rex Gibson-edited versions (Cambridge School Shakespeare).

Philip H. Pollock III is professor of political science at the University of Central Florida. He has taught courses in research methods at the undergraduate and graduate levels for nearly 30 years. His main research interests are American public opinion, voting behavior, techniques of quantitative analysis, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. How to deal with a passive aggressive boss?

In this book, Paula De Angelis brings to the forefront an issue usually hidden in daily day workplaces: the existence of team relationships tainted by destructive behaviors impossible to identify and challenge.

What is so wrong in harboring hidden anger in a workteam? The fact that there is hidden resistance prevents it from being addressed and solved. If people don't know that their co-workers or bosses harbor hidden resentment towards them, no redress can be offered. Having no venting and solving of the grievance leaves the door open to vile behaviors like revenge, project sabotaging, reputation damage...and other backstabbing actions.

Why people don't confront any more? The mere hint of being perceived as "angry" stops lots of employees from expressing legitimate grievances. The only other answer is to enact hidden acts of sabotage that will, sooner or later, destroy careers and reputations.

De Angelis is very good at describing the indicators of passive aggression; the chapter on remedies is a bit short. Perhaps we need to open up this issue and design interventions to make people responsible at the organizational level for the damage they can cause others and their careers...now, we only know how to identify the behavior, and protect ourselves.

It is what we all know to be true but don't want to admitt.

This really hit home with me. I was employeed for over 14 years and as the abuse became more evident I made excuses to convince my leadership had my best interest at heart. I have left the job I thought I loved and found peace and my self worth again. Funny thing is I didn't know I had lost those things. Great book just be honest with yourself as you read it.

The author is convinced by the philosopher Bertrand Russell's view that knowledge concerning the future is possible within certain limits, although it is impossible to say how much the limits may be enlarged with the progress of science. Russell states in 'Our Knowledge of the External World' (1914) "But what is evident is that any proposition about the future belongs by its subject-matter to some particular science, and is to be ascertained, if at all, by the methods of that science".

About the Author
Robert H. Samet is a civil engineer with forty years experience as a specialist consultant in planning and futures research. He was a consultant of US-based Planning Research Corporation that applied systems science approaches to international development programmes in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. His clients included the Ministries of Planning in both Algeria and Saudi Arabia and also the Saudi Royal Commission for Industrial Cities. He directed a multi-client study to develop the London Megapolis Regional Information System to explain the changing gradients between locations in property investment returns.��He is the author of four articles for the journal 'Futures': 'Futurists and their schools' (Vol. 42 (8) 2010), 'Exploring the future with complexity science: the emerging models' (Vol. 43 (8) 2011), 'Complexity science and theory development for the futures field' (Vol. 44 (5) 2012), and 'Complexity, the science of cities and long-range futures' (Vol. 47 (3) 2013). He and his wife live in a village in Lincolnshire, England, and have four married sons in the USA, Scotland, France and Switzerland.

"Heavy" but Interesting

Complexity science (as a "formal" science) is only about 40 years old (since I'm twice that age, I think of it as a "young" science).This book is very thorough and well written, and it's nice to know that within only 40 years the subject has obtained enough credibility to be considered by a wide range of subject matter experts in a fairly wide variety of fields. Chapter 3 gives a brief "history" of some of the basic concepts of complexity science, which will be interesting for new readers about the field.
While I didn't find EXACTLY what I had hoped in the book (I was hoping for something that probably hasn't been written yet), I did find it very interesting and have already recommended it to a long time friend who has an intense interest in planning. If you are interested in the prospects for the planet, you'll be pleased to find that at least some folk are attempting to anticipate, and therefore possibly improve, prospects for the earth on a L O N G range perspective.

Promised more than it delivered

A big book that can be boiled down to a sentence: Human society has predictable patterns and once you discover those patterns you can predict the future.

Now, that only applies to broad general future predictions and it completely ignores the impact disruptive technologies have on these predictable patterns. So, you really can't do long-range futures research because of emergent behaviors as described in complexity science. Thus, the author inadvertently refutes the premise of his own book.

You are better off reading some good books on scenario planning if you want to do some actual futures research.

According to UCLA professor Nabokov (Native American Testimony), the places that American Indians call sacred may be as wondrous as "cliffs spilling with waterfalls" and as humble as "caves splattered with bat excrement." What makes them important is not postcard-perfect beauty but the beliefs a group has about "what lies within or beneath what the eye can see." This excellent volume presents the "biographies" of 16 such places, from Maine to California. Through them, Nabokov surveys a wide range of Native American spiritual practices and reveals how intrusions into Native Americans' land have also constituted assaults upon their religious beliefs. Indeed, many of the assaults continue to this day: after the disruptions caused by war, disease, missionary activity and forced relocation came those of hydroelectric dams, agribusiness, parking lots and extreme sports buffs. Nabokov's deeply informed text is enhanced by first-person accounts of his visits to the locations and by his spirited commentary on the writings of other ethnographers, naturalists, linguists and anthropologists. Sentimental clich�s and monolithic views are dismantled along the way. Each of Nabokov's biographies can be savored separately; taken together, they demonstrate both that there is "more to some American places than [meets] the eye" and that Native Americans have known that for a very long time. Nabokov present 16 "biographies of place," each of a habitat illustrating the bond between North American Indian cultures and their environment perpetuated by myths, legends, and rituals. He maps out some of the thousands of mounds in the Midwest thought to express cosmological beliefs and recounts multiple visits by an anthropologist in the 1930s to a Canadian Ojibwa enclave "caught in a time capsule" manifested by its all-consuming ties to the natural world. An account of the 1906 trek made by Indians from Taos Pueblo to Blue Lake opens a window onto the significance of that glacial pool, from which current residents believe their earliest ancestors emerged. Nabokov's case for the return of the Black Hills to the Lakota and Cheyenne is based on his explication of a book of 400 drawings by an Oglala Sioux who, 100 years ago, depicted hills, caves, and rock art still considered sacred today. The abolitionist movement, writes Stewart in this engaging study, grew out of a number of historical conditions in early American society. Fearful of secularism and materialism, and disdainful of the luxurious life of the upper class, evangelical Christians of varying ethnicity banded together to forge a religious revival called the Great Awakening. In the South these evangelicals, especially the Quakers, confronted slave-holding Anglicans. They steadily worked to convert pro-slavery individuals, and they were often successful. By recruiting escaped slaves to speak out publicly against "the peculiar institution," the abolitionists galvanized public opinion outside the South, leading to the sectionalism that would later find its ultimate expression in the Civil War. Stewart's account of the important role that women played in the abolitionist movement is of special interest.

A great history of the abolitionist movement

In this book, originally published in 1976, Stewart provides a basic history of the abolitionist movement beginning with the period of the American Revolution. While most think of abolition as a 19th-century movement, Stewart demonstrates that this period is also important in examining this movement. Many states, primarily in the North, found that the institution of slavery conflicted with the ideas of republicanism that they were using to defend their own rights. During the years following the Revolution, the Northern states abolished slavery either immediately through court decisions as in Massachusetts, or through gradual programs as in New York. The ideas of the Revolution also played an important role in antislavery movements throughout the 19th century.
In examining the 19th Century movement, Stewart focuses most of his book on the Antebellum period and shows the importance of religion and moral suasion in the movement. Stewart also examines how, as time progressed, the movement expanded into the political realm through third parties such as the Liberty and Free Soil parties and how the ideas of the abolitionists influenced the formation of the Republican Party in the mid-1850s. Divisions emerged over the extent to which the abolitionists should become involved in politics and parties corrupted by slaveholders.
The main weakness of this book, in my opinion is that the Civil War years are only briefly covered. It was during these years that the abolitionists were able to put the most pressure on the federal government to take action against slavery. It was also during these years that many of the goals of the abolitionist movement were met. While racial equality was not obtained during Reconstruction, certain rights were guaranteed through Constitutional amendments. Abolitionists played roles in turning the Civil War into a war merely to preserve the Union into a war to create "a more perfect union." This role should be more fully examined in a history of the abolitionist movement.

Good Profit = Good Book

Overall the book is well written and easy to read and includes a personal side of Charles Koch not seen before-like the 153 death threats he got in 2014. The book discusses how Koch has grown tremendously since the 1960's (Charles didn't simply inherit the company as some might say). At 79 Koch still puts in 9 hour work days. The company has grown so much by reinvesting 90% of their earnings back into the company. What is interesting is how Koch Industries despite having 100,000 employees doesn't appear to be bureaucratic and individuals are always asked to challenge and consider continuous improvement which sometimes never occurs at even Fortune 500 companies.

Overall the book is a mix of economics, a business profile, behavioral finance, philosophy, and good story telling of business failures. What I enjoyed the most Charles Koch is honest about his failures (there are plenty too). At one time Koch believed the company would go bankrupt in the 1970s. Koch tries to apply Market Based Management to every day examples (including the NFL and even how much time he should spend working editing grammar of the book he wrote). Case studies at the end of the book are interesting. Anecdotes of Koch over the long company history are sprinkled throughout the book. For instance the company got rid of insurance programs and mainly self insures. Only downside of book is wished it had more of the personal side. The book is really a great book for anyone who wants to try to live their life to their maximum potential.

Made a believer out of a lifelong contractor

This is one of two books I highly recommend to anyone who wants to build and maintain a team of high-performing individuals.

Before I give info about the book, I'll lead up to it by explaining why a lifelong contractor decided to leave the profession of contracting to join the company of the man who wrote this book.

I'd been working as a very successful independent contractor for well over 20 years, not wanting to get sucked into company politics. With contracts ranging from 6 months to about a year, I've seen a fair share of different management styles. In each case, whenever a given project ended, and I felt I was no longer contributing to the team in a valuable manner, I'd pack up and find a new client. Or I'd find a new project at the same client site.

In most cases, I was offered a salaried position with the client, or offered a position to maintain my work - even at the same rate of pay used to create the work. Neither was interesting to me because 1) the company politics collided with my personal viewpoints of efficient and practical ways of working, and 2) paying a high-rate contractor to maintain well-written and well-designed solutions was a waste of resources.

So when I stumbled across this company called Koch, and got few months' insight on how and why they manage employees as they so, I was really really intrigued.

Create value by acting as entrepreneurs? Treating colleagues as clients - end expecting to be treated as clients ourselves? Offering challenging points of view not because it's simply tolerated, but because we are EXPECTED to do so? Working on your strengths more than building up your weaknesses to further one's career? Teaching one's industry competitors how to make their internal management teams more like the free market? Encouraging each of us to be confident enough to earn decision rights, yet humble enough to accept feedback for those decisions... even when the one receiving correction is the owner of the company?

It's all part of the company culture, and documented on this book. The first one, The Science Of Success, is the earlier version of this. Actually, these two compliment each other as their audiences are different.

Well worth the read

I saw the author's 60 Minutes interview and got interested in a company that I knew nothing about except what the media publishes - so I bought the book. At the time I was working for one of the world's largest conglomerates, and was accustomed to self-serving management philosophies and flavor-of-the-month feel good HR junk, so I wasn't expecting much.

After reading it, I thought "if he really runs his company this way, it's something special." A few months later, I had a new job with one of his companies, and they really DO walk the walk - and I can tell you absolutely that I've never worked for a better run company with a better view to how to be efficient and effective, and have never been more valued as an employee.

Market Based Management is what you'd think would be common sense, but instead, what most companies today practice is top down decision making and management. The result is that the people who are furthest from the work the company is actually doing are making the decisions that will drive profit and success; and surprise! way too often, those decisions reveal a distressing lack of connection to reality.

MBM is about how to bring the best that every employee has to offer to the value stream, making a better product for the customer, a profit for the company, and a rewarding career for the employee. Read it, practice it, believe it - it works.
