Heartfulness is a blessing to hold in your hands. It is incredibly beautiful, inside and out. What a gift to the world! I am reading/contemplating it every day. It is so well done- every page an artwork unfolding:) This is yet another master piece from Robert Sardello. Today -while praying/practicing -I sensed the radiating quality of heartfulness as enlivening, embodied World presences. Radiating as some thing like being full of life, full of existence. Thank you for writing this lovely book.

This is Sardello's finest work to date and builds on his previous high watermark SILENCE. HEARTFULNESS elaborates on that work by delving deeper into the practical aspects of contemplation. These are presented in perfectly segmented steps that are accessible with minimal conceptual baggage. People from many traditions can benefit from this straightforward approach, which combines an incarnational use of the physical body with guidance that avoids New Age egoism. Bravo!

Great book, highly recommended.

Its a tragedy that the only review of this book so far gives one star for no reason. I invite you to read that review. 2. Bg5 is incorrect?

OK, seriously, any Trompowsky player has to have this book. First of all recognize it is a repertoire book, not all white replies are covered but the ones that are are covered in depth with many original ideas. As an experiment, I opened the book to a random page five times and found a TN four of those times.

The subtitle of the book is "an attacking repertoire" and he does tend to give some of the more aggressive options. For example, one of his main lines is the two pawn sac

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. f3 (he also covers 4. d5 in a separate chapter) Qa5+ 5. c3 Nf6 6. d5 Qb6 7. e4 !? Qxb2 8. Nd2 Qxc3 9. Bc7!?

This is the first detailed treatment of this relatively new line. Very much original analysis. But for the faint of heart he also gives 7. Bc1 as a backup. This is the theme for most of the book. Aggressive lines given with back ups.

As another example. The system that has always given me headaches is

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 e6 .... ack

Pert offers two main lines against this, neither of which I had ever considered myself.

first is the usual 3. e4 h6 4. Bxf6 Qxf6 followed by the relatively unusual 5.c3 !? (normal is Nf3 or Nc3)

second is 3. Nd2 !?

Looking forward to trying this out.

The other thing I really love about this book is that it is written by a strong player who is a "true believer". He believes in the opening and plays it all the time himself. If I remember correctly I believe he said 1/6 of all the games in his database on a particular line he recommends were played by him! Not only that, he is giving away his TN's.

This book is highly recommended by this Trompowsky player. If you are just starting out then you should also be getting the book "Starting out: the Trompowsky attack" by Palliser. Great book. It will have the lines that Pert leaves out but everything in less depth of course.

I almost forgot to mention, as an added bonus you get coverage of the pseudo-Tromp 1. d4 d5 2. Bg5 and the the anti-Dutch line 1.d4 f5 2. Bg5.

IM Pert is a leading authority on the Trompowsky and his book is well researched and loaded with new ideas. I don't understand how anyone can believe it is worth one star. An author shouldn't be punished with one star if the reviewer doesn't accord the opening any merit.

Dr. Cohen is currently Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona. He recently retired as an Assistant Dean and Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He brings considerable clinical knowledge to the project as well as extensive medical writing and clinical research experience. Dr. August is an internist and nephrologist with a special in interest and expertise in medical complications of pregnant women. Outstanding reference highly recommended!

Drs. August & Cohen's "Obstetric Medicine" is clearly written, well-organized, topical, and very relevant. I have already used it both as a reference, to look up a specific point related to a clinical question I had (kidney stones in a pregnant patient), as well as to read up on a topic I wanted to learn more about (respiratory / lung diseases and pregnancy). The book will be useful to a range of readers interested in the the care of pregnant women, from students of medicine and nursing, to everyday practitioners and senior clinicians. All organ systems are covered (it is over 1,000 pages!), with sections on the preconception / prenatal periods, ethical considerations, and even critical care and surgery in pregnancy. "Obstetric Medicine" is the go-to source for the care of pregnant women. It is an indispensable reference!

About the Author
Percy Lubbock, (1879-1965) was an English man of letters, known as an essayist, critic and biographer. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. He won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 1922, with his memoir of childhood summer holidays at Earlham Hall in Norfolk. He became an émigré, and lived in Gli Scafari on the Gulf of Spezia. Towards the end of his life he went blind. Remarkably well-placed socially, his intellectual connections included E. M. Forster, a Cambridge contemporary, Edith Wharton (a member of her Inner Circle from about 1906), Howard Sturgis and Bernard Berenson. He reviewed, anonymously in the columns of the Times Literary Supplement, significant modern novels including Forster's Howard's End. His 1921 book The Craft of Fiction ('the official textbook of the Modernist aesthetics of indirection') became a straw man for writers including Virginia Woolf and Graham Greene, who disagreed with his rather formalist view of the novel. Amongst his other works are: Samuel Pepys (1909), A Book of English Prose (1913) and Shades of Eton (1929).

This, like E. M. Forster's "Aspects of the Novel," is an essential work of criticism, and it's nice to see it back in print. Lubbock's outlook is an extension of Henry James's. He is more immediately accessible than the Master, and he illustrates the "craft" by reference to classic novels such as Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," Thackeray's "Vanity Fair," and of course James's own works, particularly "The Ambassadors." Lubbock, Forster, F. R. Leavis's "The Great Tradition," and Ian Watt's "Rise of the Novel" give you what you need to know if you want to understand the central canon in Anglo-American and European fiction.

A major work of literary criticism

Lubbock 's subject is the craft-of- fiction and he looks at work of Flaubert, Henry James, and Tolstoy in order to teach the tricks of the trade. Much of what he speaks about concerns point- of- view and much about the virtue of 'showing' rather than 'telling'. In one of the work's defining passages he writes, ".. the art of fiction does not begin until the novelist thinks of the story as a matter to be shown, to be so exhibited that it will tell itself To hand over the reader the facts of the story merely as so much information- this is no more than to state the 'argument' of the book... The book is not a row of facts, it is a single image; the facts have no validity in themselves. It is not the simple art of narrative, but the comprehensive art of fiction that I am considering' and in fiction there can be no appeal to any authority outside the book itself."

For Lubbock the consummate master of the techniques of 'showing' is James. And a central part of the work is devoted to analysis of the technique of 'the master'.

Chilling mystery set in 1880's London

After I finished "The Trial of Elizabeth Cree", I felt chilled by how Ackroyd strings us along for the whole novel, and blows us out of the water with an unexpected revelation. Set in 1880 and in London, there are a series of murders, and some suspect that a being out of kabalistic lore is responsible. We, who can see through the eyes of the Crees know better; the murderer is fully human, and quite the picture of human evil. Along the way, we meet a few 19th century luminaries, and see how they are intertwined in the plot. Ackroyd did well here, and I hope more people discover this novel.

Read this book!

I think how much you like a book very often depends on how you're feeling about life as you read it. If that is the only factor, then I must have been in one hell-of-a-mood as I read this one. What a great book! I could, prior to reading this book, never have imagined reading a book about a psychopath, judging by what I usually read at that time. But I'm so glad I did! I was introduced to the author through his book 'Chatterton' by a now-estranged friend. Whereas that book was passable, this one, in my opinion, is exceptional!

I'll try and write a couple of sentences which are actually about the book now: I think the main sellers of the book are its plot ofcourse, its simplicity, and the pacing, which is sheer genius. I'm a sucker for simplicity if the language is elegant--which it is in this case--when it offsets a very unusual storyline. Should also mention the atmosphere of the book: its descriptions of London in that period seems very plausible and authentic. Loved swimming in the dark hues of the book. (Never mind that this seems to counter my opening conjecture!) Love the book, especially it's unpredictability! A must read guys, this one is one of those undiscovered treasures.

A vivid, truly scary read

This book, also seen on shelves under the title of "Dan Leno and the Lime House Golem" paints a splendid picture of a squalid scene. The sights, sounds, and smells of London are vividly imagined by the interested reader. This very creepy story left me dazed and shaky. When I finished this book late at night, I put the book down, thought about it for a moment, then picked it up and started over again at page 1.

Poor Quality

The information in the book is terrific, if you can keep the book together. This book is junk compared to previous additions. The pages fall right out, everyone in my class is experiencing the same problem. This is a book a student is going to want to keep, but can't because it is so poorly made.

Canadian VS American Editions

This is a great learning tool for the student or at home learner. BE AWARE that there are two different editions....one for the Canadian Market and one for the American Market. The Canadian version has a lime with a spoon of lime zest on the front cover. The American one is the artichoke. There are differences in the submitted recipies i.e. from Canadian Chefs

Excellent text for basic skills.

Although I was also disappointed that the book did not come with the CD, I have found it a great read with a wealth of useful information presented in an organized, easy to read fashion. This is a staple book used in culinary programs, and I will be keeping this book long after I graduate. I have recommended it to friends who want to learn to be better cooks without going to school for it. The chef who is teaching one of my culinary classes told us that if you only have two books on cooking, he'd recommend this one and The Joy of Cooking. Another great feature of this book is that the pages are coated (that's what makes the book so incredibly heavy) so that they last longer when you inevitably spill something on them while using the book in the kitchen. I agree that a spiral binding might have been a better choice but I have mostly found the book will lay flat no matter where you need it kept open to.
