Absolutely Amazing

I, like many other people, used to dislike Harry Potter. I had never actually read the books, but for some reason looked down on Potter fans, thinking them to be a bit off color. I was certain that the whole thing was highly overrated and that it had been blown way out of proportion (like Twilight).

I could not have been more wrong. I finally read the books at the continuous urging of a friend in my junior year of high school, and they have become my favorite books of all time. I have already reread all seven books and stood in line for hours to see the midnight premiere of the newest movie.

When is the last time you have read a book and instantly wanted to pick it up and read it again? It doesn't happen often.

I can't even begin to tell you how incredible these books are. Not only are they very entertaining, but they are filled with the important themes of good vs. evil, the power of love, and the value of good choices. The characters in this book have become part of my life.

If you are at all hesitant to read this series because of its classification as a 'fantasy' series, I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. Yes, the book is about wizards and magic, but you would be shocked at how quickly the story pulls you in.

I can only ask you to PLEASE read the first book. If you like it, keep reading. If you don't, keep reading. The books get better as they progress, and I feel that the final chapters of the last book are some of the best reading I have ever done.

Also, do not judge these books from the movies. Everybody knows that the book is always better than the movie, and it's the same case here. The movies are great, but you need to read the books to fully appreciate what's happening and become a true Potter fan.

Great if you want the full set in hardcover at once.

I totally expected the "chest" to be made out of cardboard. I expected it to not be an expensive piece of artwork. I expected to get 7 books, some related stickers and a case to put them in.

I got exactly what I expected. And I couldn't be happier.

Applying for the amazon visa (and getting $30 off of this purchase) made this buy an excellent one!

Boxed Set Can Serve Dual Purposes

I agree with everyone who has written a review saying that this boxed set was VERY misleading in presentation. This is a given. The publishers should have made a stronger cardboard box, included felt in the lining of the box, and should have downright made the box out of wood or leather. This incredible seven book series deserves the highest quality of workmanship and we, as the loyal fans, deserve the best offer and the finest quality of product. We deserve the publisher's respect, as well. They should be ashamed of themselves.

If you are buying this set because you already have the books and want to get newer versions of them and are focusing moreso on the collector's box to house all of the books and keep them pristine, I recommend that you DO NOT buy this particular set. It is in no way up to standard and the box is very misleading as a "collector's" item.

However, if you are like me and this is your first set of these books and want a fabulous deal on all seven of the hardcover books, which averages out to $17.00 a book, then you might want to think twice.

Here is what I am doing with the cardboard box that they give you. I took out the inner cardboard box that the books are already placed in and I am housing the books inside of there on my bookshelf. The main portion of the box (or trunk) I am using to house all of my Harry Potter DVDs and any other collectables I might have so that they are all kept together in one place. The stickers that they give you can be used on all four corners to cover the gaps of the cardboard that they didn't do themselves. You could put all four house stickers on each corner side.

So, if you want this set solely as a collector's item, don't get it. Wait for another version to come out. If you are mainly focusing on the great deal on the hardcover books and not the box, you might want to go ahead with this offer.

The Oldest Fairt Tale?

I enjoyed this book. I got this because it was recommended as an alternative to the popular fairy tales that don't include children of color. The cover art work is beautiful. This book was taken from an ancient Egyptian text and has similarities to the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife in the bible. All the material in this book may not be appropriate for the age fairy tales are designed for. This book does talk about how one of the brother's wives in the story tries to seduce the other brother, but the brother turns his sister in law down and she then cries rape to save face. This book includes the story written in hieroglyphics and then in English. I didn't like the way the Notes were organized at the end of the story. In the notes they try to explain the discrepancies in the translation. I thought this section was poorly written and difficult to read. Overall I liked it. I value reading the stories that cultures value and teach and reteach to their people. It gives insights to what a culture values and desired in the character of it's people. This original papyrus was a copy of an older text as explained in the forward of the book be Runoko Rashidi. I highly recommend.

Al Bahr Towers are the most distinctive and innovative new landmark in the Middle East. Built for the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, the two 25-storey towers provide Abu Dhabi with a unique gateway to the city. Though built out of glass and steel, they represent a complete departure from other contemporary high-rise buildings. Modern and pioneering in their use of the most up-to-date technologies, they have been conceived to be entirely rooted in the local culture and environment. The towers are designed using geometric principles derived from traditional Islamic architecture. Their distinguishing feature is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional mashrabiya, a wooden lattice screen that is commonly used by vernacular Islamic architecture to provide shade and privacy. With over 2000 components, the towers’ monumental mashrabiya have been specially developed by the architects Aedas not only for their cultural associations but also their sustainable benefits. They create a unique dynamic shading system that opens and closes during the course of each day in response to the movement of the sun, substantially reducing solar gain.�

About the Author

Peter Oborn is former Deputy Chairman of Aedas Architects Ltd, part of the Aedas Group, which is ranked as one of the world’s largest international architectural practices. Peter has considerable experience of working internationally, particularly in the Gulf, and has completed projects in Oman, Qatar and the UAE. He was responsible for inception of the practice’s Research & Development group, based in London, which has developed specialisms in sustainability, advanced modelling and computational design. Underpinning the work of the group is a commitment to an increasingly rigorous and thoughtful design process, combining empirical analysis with creativity. Peter is a national member of the RIBA Council and was elected the RIBA's Vice President for International Relations in October 2011.

About the Author
Dr. Vinay K. Ingle is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University. He received his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1981. He has broad research experience and has taught courses on topics including signal and image processing, stochastic processes, and estimation theory. Dr. Ingle has co-authored numerous higher level books including DSP LABORATORY USING THE ADSP-2181 MICROPROCESSOR (Prentice Hall, 1991), DISCRETE SYSTEMS LABORATORY (Brooks-Cole, 2000), STATISTICAL AND ADAPTIVE SIGNAL PROCESSING (Artech House, 2005), and APPLIED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (Cambridge University Press, 2011).

Affiliation: University of California, San Diego and Northeastern University Bio: Dr. John Proakis is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego and a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University. Perfect but aging companion to Discrete Time Signal Processing

This book does exactly what it purports to do - it teaches the reader how to perform signal processing tasks using Matlab. It starts out with signals and systems and moves on to the DTFT, the Z Transform, the DFT, digital filter structures including both IIR and FIR design, and finally covers some advanced topics in adaptive signal processing and communications. It even contains full-blown projects using Matlab on adaptive channel equalization, binary spread spectrum communications, and system identification. The reader should use another text such as Oppenheim's "Discrete Time Signal Processing" to get the theory, and come to this book on how to implement that theory in Matlab. The one drawback is that the book is older, so it is using Matlab 5. Also, another reviewer mentioned that much of the book is inaccessible to users who do not have the rather expensive signal processing toolkit at their disposal. Fortunately, thanks to the open source movement, this last problem has been solved. Octave, now on SourceForge, an open source code repository, has many of the matlab functions available for free that you need to do signal processing.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book to signal processing students and professionals who wish to incorporate Matlab into their work.

Not bad for MATLAB, but for DSP get Lyons' book.

Ingle and Proakis' book isn't a bad deal if you have to learn MATLAB and DSP at the same time. There are plenty of MATLAB examples, however, I was disappoined in all the discrepancies between the code listed in the book and the code downloaded from the publisher (Brooks/Cole). Also, as a DSP beginner, I wish I & P had included more diagrams. For newcomers to DSP, Richard Lyons' "Understanding Digital Signal Procssing" is still the best book available (in my opinion).

Frustrating

I have an expensive version of Matlab with the DSP toolkit. I was excited to learn how to use it from this book. What a let down. The first functions that I found were unusable making the examples worthless. Then I noticed a web site where I could download these functions that were created by the author(sited in the text): the link no longer exists (surprise!) rendering this book worth less than the paper it was printed on! Besides the link to the non-existent site the author gives no more incite into how to enable Matlab to work with this text. Don't buy this book!

"An army marches on its stomach" stated Napoleon Bonaparte and the German field kitchen or Gulaschkanone provided every German soldier at least one hot meal per day. The Germans set up a chow system that, when it wasn't getting shot up by Allied fighters, was second to none. The daily ration for each German soldier was set up by the OKW, with full account taken of the man's employment and theater of operations. As a matter of policy, the German Army planned to live off the land in the territory it occupied, and it therefore confiscated or purchased food for men and animals wherever possible, using these foodstuffs to supplement or replace military rations. The German Army usually maintained a ten-day reserve for every soldier on its established strength. The daily ration (Portionsatz) included three meals, to include (expressed proportionally in relation to the total daily amount) breakfast (1/6), lunch (1/2), and evening meal (1/3). The various categories of Portionsatz (to each of which was added a small issue of wine during the summer months).

The rations were divided into the following types: Type 1, Type II, Type III, Type IV, Iron Rations, Combat and Close Combat Ration Packs, March Ration, and Animal Rations.

When fresh meat was provided for butchery and inclusion in the various types of full rations-Types I through IV, divisional butchery platoons could process 40 beef cattle (40,000 meat rations), 80 pigs (24,000 meat rations) or 240 sheep (190,000 meat rations) per day. Meanwhile field bakery companies could produce between 15,000 and 19,2000 bread rations every day.

Wherever possible, meals were cooked centrally by horse-drawn wood-burning field kitchens or Gulaschkanone in non-mechanized units and by equivalent field cooking ranges mounted on trucks for Panzer and Panzergrenadier units. Field kitchens were categorized either as large (catering for 125-225 men) or small (catering for 50-125 men), with other types of field cooking equipment issued to units of less than 60 men. The Gulaschkanone or field kitchen was an efficient means of providing large quantities of nourishing hot meals with the minimum of resources. Meal menus regularly included potatoe soup, pea and ham soup, and all sorts of stews. Generally, such meals were accompanied by a bread or biscuit ration.

Packed with excellant photographs as well as recipes and a detailed breakdown of all the parts that made up a field kitchen, the reader won't be disappointed when they purchase this book. Author Scott L. Thompson looks at the role that the field kitchen played in World War II and does an outstanding job of shedding new light on a subject that is rarely covered and/or discussed in regard to World War II history.

Wonderful book on an important but obscure topic that shouldn't be.

At first glance you might wonder why you would spend the money on a large format book with such an obscure topic.
However, it is well worth the money, as it is a great insight into how armies get fed in the field, specifically the German Army in WWII.

It's been written that amateurs study military tactics, but professionals study logistics.

This reviewer became interested in German field cooking after reading the relevant sections on German Rations and the field kitchen in the "US Army Manual on the German Army." Even though what little WWII re-enacting I do is Soviet. Another item that whetted my interest was coming up to Fort Indiantown Gap for the annual Bulge re-enactment on cold days in January, and smelling the chow cooking in Scott's kitchen. Usually can't identify what it is, but it makes you want to grab a mess tin and get into the chow line.

The book has an excellent photo spread showing how a meal was cooked from start to finish, ending up with the delivery of hot food to the various units in the line.

The author goes into fairly good detail of the potential recipies, including pointing out that most of the time, if the German supply line was functioning, they were cooking using relatively fresh food, including fresh vegetables, and meat from the division "butcher platoon" which was responsible for converting meat on the hoof into cuts that could be used by the field kitchens at company level. Fresh bread was also provided by a division level bakery.

Some of the trivia about the food itself is fascinating, including the direction to the cooks to ensure the meat was in big enough chunks to be seen by the soldier. Most of the recipes had a fairly large fat content. In addition to providing calories and fuel for the soldiers, a large fat content had the advantage that once the food cooled in the mess kit, it would congeal and stay put.

This is in direct contrast to U.S. Army practice, during WWII, which relied very heavily on what was called a "B" ration, which was largely canned or dried to avoid the need for refrigeration.

Of course, if Allied bombers were tearing up the supply lines, the chow got pretty slim.

A couple of minor quibbles. First, I would have liked to seen more emphasis on the recipes.

Secondly, while Scott does describe the stowage in the "limber cart" portion of the field kitchen, perhaps a better description of the intent of the "iron rations" carried on board would be in order for those not familiar with it from other sources. The iron rations consisted of 200 cans of meat and 200 packages of a long term storage biscuit or cracker. The intent of these "iron rations" was that they were only to be used in an emergency, when food was not coming up through the normal supply channels, and were only to be used on authorization of an officer.

This book does have the effect of somewhat humanizing the WWII German soldier, showing that regardless of your nationality, there is something to be said for dry socks and hot chow when you are in combat.

All in all a wonderful book, I would give it six stars out of five. Another reviewer stated that Scott's book is a "labor of love" and they were right.

Now, if you'll pardon me, I've got to figure out how to crash 2nd Panzer's chow line at Reading, dressed as a Soviet rifleman.

I just finished reading my copy and am very pleased to add it to my library. As a non reenactor type I found the authors personal story of locating and restoring a Field Kitchen to its former glory to be quite entertaining. The decision to approach the topic in the first person elevated the book from a simple sterile reference to a quite entertaining and educational experience. The current day pictures bring the whole story to life. It is a must have book for anyone wanting to understand the day to day life of the German soldier in WWII. I certainly recommend it.

Good for pharmacy students

Taking pathophysiology in pharmacy school, this was a wonderful book. It was so detailed, and supplemented the lectures with material. For me, reading helps me understand the material and put the big picture together. It explains in more detail certain aspects the professors went over in class that help me learn. The pictures are in color. The book I got was a paperback, but I did not mind that. Really, this is a great human physiology book that I would recommend any student to consider as a supplemental book or for a professor to consider as a required reading book. It definitely helped me study.

I purchased this book over this past summer and it was sent to me just fine, already in a binder, which I loved. However, toward the end of the semester we were learning from a specific unit in this book, and when I began to study this unit, I found that the textbook was missing 40-some pages that were crucial to the unit we were studying. I would not have been aware of this until we reached this point in the semester during class, and when I requested a return the seller was not even sympathetic to the fact that I paid asking price for a book that was missing an entire section of my class material. The seller said they would not accept a return because it was so far after the return period, which I can understand. I'm just disappointed that now I can't even give this book to another student because they'll be missing a whole unit and will feel the same way I do now. All I wanted to do was send it back, hoping the seller would feel some sympathy that I paid a lot of money for a book that wasn't complete. But that was not the case, and I am now left with an incomplete textbook.

About the Author

Rena Cook is Head of Voice at the School of Drama, University of Oklahoma and was a high school drama teacher for 16 years. Rena presents voice workshops
for state drama conferences in Colorado, Texas, and Georgia, as well as the Educational Theatre Associations' Conference. A professional voice and dialect coach, Rena served as Editor-in-Chief of the Voice and Speech Review.

Invaluable!

Rena Cook's voice workbook is a must have in any High School performance curriculum, whether it be theatre, speech or a musical theatre course, this book is invaluable. As an individual one could greatly benefit from this book; as a teacher it is invaluable. I know of no other resource as comprehensive as this to train young people to use their instrument effectively! The book is perfectly laid out, user friendly and is completely solid in method and approach! Discussion questions assist in providing for extension of activities and reflection opportunity encourages meta-cognition during the process of training one's voice; this is not just filled with great technique but also awesome pedagogy! Teacher tips are abundant and incredible. Ms. Cook's experience as a master teacher are evident and she is generous in sharing not only her voice expertise, but also her pedagogical prowess with the reader. I cannot recommend this book and the accompanying included DVD highly enough. Every High School and Junior High Theatre & Speech class would benefit by incorporating this valuable and important guide to safe and effective use of the voice directly into the curriculum. A Must Have!

High-school drama students will love this!

This hugely entertaining, yet profoundly informative book by Rena Cook is destined to be a hit with the high-school drama student. In thirteen chapters, with come-hither titles like, "I hate my voice," "Why am I so tense?", and "No, I don't have marbles in my mouth," Cook's important addition to the literature is very welcome. Before becoming an internationally-known figure in the voice and speech world, Cook was, for sixteen years, a high-school drama teacher herself, so knows of which she speaks! Without a trace of condescension, Cook includes fictional blogs from students wrestling with the vocal demands of the theatre they have so recently encountered, and she speaks directly to those concerns. The book explains the nuts and bolts of phonation, articulation, breathing, etc, in a very easy-to-follow and sensible way, again without an excess of redundant anatomical detail but without dumbing down what the actor needs to know. She provides frequent and succinct summaries of her teaching, enjoyable and relevant exercises, and invites the user to make a journal-cum-blog of this excellent work book. Fully indexed, with a generous reading list, and wonderful photographs of "just-like-me" high-school actors at work on stage, this book will readily find a warm welcome among its intended readership. Helpful DVD Bonus

Very useful book for young/beginning acting students. Also a great resource for renewing an instructor's interest in teaching voice work--reassurance seeing exercises one knows, rejuvenation finding new activities to learn and teach. The accompanying DVD is a useful bonus since many voice/acting exercises are hard to describe in words and even illustrations.

Bread Crumbs to Follow Through the Darkening Woods

“Late Night Thoughts About Science” by Peter A. Sturrock is a teaser as well as a repast. It's a repast because the short examples of a variety of scientific anomalies, as orthodoxy styles them, is in itself rich and rewarding. Examples of, for instance, remote viewing or clairvoyance or well-documented UFO phenomena are carefully chosen and challenge readers who bring arch-skeptical attitudes toward such things. Either his examples are invented or mistaken or even fraudulent, the reader might think ... OR, the book clearly suggests, it is facts themselves that are are damned, as Charles Fort said, by an orthodoxy which will not or cannot entertain them as incontrovertible facts. The reader who is willing to choose the latter option is at the beginning, not the end, of an intellectual adventure.

Chapter after chapter, the facts are presented carefully, quietly, matter-of-factually, until the burden is on the reader to refute them or - one intention of this short collection, I believe - use the well-chosen suggestions for further reading to explore each subject in depth and detail on his or her own.

The seventeen chapters open with four instances of unresolved issues that would be well known to scientifically trained persons - ball lightning, the Allais effect, low energy nuclear reactions, and properties of beta decay. This frames the inquiry in a way that is well within orthodox science, since these puzzles are part of the lore of orthodoxy itself and ought to be somewhat familiar. They are bread crumbs that one follows with easy acquiescence into the darkening forest of edgier facts where night is falling.

With the chapter on precognition, the text moves into what some call “paranormal” (in order to make clear they know what is normal and what is not), and that's when the reader either tosses the book away with a snort or says, hmmm, if this single account is true, what else might be true about this mysterious universe, final knowledge of which I certainly do not have, and how can I learn more? The “further reading” suggestions point the way. The segue from daylight science to nighttime reflections is seamless but as one reads about psychokinesis or crop circles, the night-time thoughts persist until the dawn and then they remain in the daylight.

Richard Feynman observed that a fact that is both a fact and anomalous is the most interesting fact because it suggests at the least that something has been overlooked or smoothed out on behalf of a coherent but false hypothesis. At the most, however, the anomalous fact might become the cornerstone of an entirely new way of framing what we know. Sturrock's lifetime of work is a testimony to that open-minded approach and where it might lead. My review on Amazon of his book “A Tale of Two Sciences” goes into much more detail about Sturrock's courage and career and the toll it takes to ask questions that respectable circle-the-wagons science prefers not to hear. He is an esteemed physicist who made major contributions to plasma physics and a thinker who has studied and asked hard serious questions of well-documented UFO phenomena, preferring to let the evidence suggest answers rather than making his prior answers distort or dismiss the evidence. If the reader's curiosity is stimulated by this collection, there is a lot more Sturrock-work to explore.

“Late Night Thoughts” is wise, thoughtful, careful, mature reflection, a good complement to his other books and evidence that at 92, Sturrock continues to find both fascination and fertile grounds for exploration in domains that others are too timid to touch.

Challenging thoughts about science

Every scientist should be exposed to the ideas put forth in this book -- which exposes some of the prejudices and assumptions lurking in modern science. The effectiveness of the scientific method is based in large part on its procedures for eliminating errors and avoiding models that do not agree with observations. The author in essence challenges scientists to objectively apply these methods to ideas that may seem contrary to accepted ideas. I believe most scientists will find, in the chapters of this book, claims they believe to be bogus -- possibly without having personally studied the purported phenomena. What then would they give as the reason for such a conclusion?
